North Carolina Garners Two Wins Over NC State

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina's men's and women's swimming and diving teams wrapped up their Atlantic Coast Conference dual meet seasons Friday night with a pair of wins over North Carolina State Friday at Koury Natatorium. The Tar Heel men, ranked No. 14, defeated NC State 167-131, while the Tar Heel women, ranked No. 12, defeated the Wolfpack 172-116.

Carolina's Joe Kinderwater, a freshman from Lancaster, Pa., swam his way into the record books in the 1650-yard freestyle, winning the event in 15:05.42. That time was .45 of a second better than the 2008 NCAA Division I automatic qualifying time in the event. He also moved up into third place in Tar Heel history on the list of all-time performers, behind only current teammate Chip Peterson and Yuri Suguiyama. Kinderwater's time was his career best and currently ranks No. 8 nationally in Division I so far in the 2007-08 campaign.

Tigers Sweep Duke on Senior Day

CLEMSON, S.C. - In their final regular season dual meet of the season, the Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving Teams sent off their seniors with a splash, with the men downing the Blue Devils 156-116 and the women winning 162.5-133.5. With the win, the men finish the dual-meet season at 12-2, 6-2 ACC, while the women up their ledger to 8-7, 3-5 ACC. Clemson's senior men won five of sixteen events on the afternoon.

With their 12th win of the season and sixth in the conference, the men's team achieved a few milestones. The sixth ACC win sets a new Clemson record for most ACC wins in a season, while the 12 wins is the second most in Clemson history behind the 13 wins the 2003-04 team achieved. Jay Crout and Bryce Herrington are the only two left over from that squad. The .857 winning percentage is the third highest on record behind a 3-0 1941-42 team and the 1976-77 team that was 7-1 (.875).

The women moved to 16-0 all-time against Duke and picked up their eighth win of the season, assuring them of a winning mark for the second straight season, and their fifth in six years under Chris Ip.

Clemson Swimming Downs Gardner-Webb on Friday Night

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - The Clemson Swimming and Diving Teams traveled to Boiling Springs, N.C., to take on Gardner-Webb on Friday night and came away with a pair of wins. The men (11-2, 5-2 ACC) won 116-83, while the women (7-7, 2-5 ACC) won 111-93. The Tigers will conclude their dual-meet season Saturday at 1 p.m. against Duke University at McHugh Natatorium.

The Tigers had a strong meet against the Bulldogs, with several different faces scoring for the Tigers.

Freshman David Gordon, typically a distance swimmer, took wins in the 200 IM, 200 Free, and 200 medley relay. In fact, a pair of Clemson groups tied to win the men's 200 medley relay, meaning eight Tigers won the event. Sophomore Andrew Cunningham won both the 500 free and 1000 free on the evening. Freshman Kyle Shoemaker also took home three wins, winning the 100 fly, 100 breast, and the aforementioned 200 medley relay. Eric Lane won the 50 free and 100 free as well.

Virginia Tech Men Defeat Washington and Lee

BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Virginia Tech men's swimming team defeated the Division III Washington and Lee Generals, 147.5-101.5, in a tune-up on Friday night in the final home meet of the season at the War Memorial Pool as the H2Okies placed first in 14 of 14 events.

Multiple individual event winners included Zach Holmes (Clifton, Va.) in the 50 and 500 freestyle, Zac Czaplicki (North Haven, Conn.) in the 100 and 200 freestyle and Andrew Rogers (Scarborough, Maine) in the 50 and 100 back.

H2Okies Sweep Competition in Final Regular Season Tune-Up

RADFORD, Va. - The Virginia Tech men's and women's swimming and diving team traveled to neighbor Radford for the final dual meet of the regular season with the ACC Championships just around the corner. The men defeated Davidson, 135-80, and VMI, 137-80. The No. 23 nationally-ranked women earned victories over Davidson (128-96), Radford (140-65) and VMI (140-34).

The H2Okies placed first in 26 of 26 events. With the wins, the 2007-08 Nike Cup champion men's record improves to 12-3 (2-2 ACC), while the women see their record move up to 14-2 (3-1 ACC).

For the men, diver Mikey McDonald (Annandale, Va.) was the only multiple individual event winner as he won the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events. The highlight of the day came in the 200-yard freestyle relay when Tech's top two teams both broke the pool record time of 1:24.83 that was set in 2002 by James Madison. The team of Scott Beard (Chesterfield, Va.), Jake Bova (Roanoke, Va.), Ian deToll (Culpeper, Va.) and Richard Ulatowski (Hamden, Conn.) placed first at 1:22.57.

Senior Day Ends Tar Heel Triumphs

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina's men's and women's swimming and diving teams staged successful senior days for 14 departing Tar Heels by sweeping Johns Hopkins and Emory Saturday afternoon at Koury Natatorium. The UNC men beat Hopkins 158-130 and topped Emory 176-117. The Tar Heel women beat Emory 165-82 and prevailed over Johns Hopkins 177-105.

Emory and Hopkins split their meets with the Hopkins men winning 144-136 and the Emory women triumphing 175-93.

Saturday marked the final home meet for 14 UNC swimmers and divers. The 14 seniors were honored in pre-meet ceremonies. The seniors on the women's team are Laura Filip, Taylor McFarlane, Erika Matheis, Lindsey Marck, Kelsey Morrissy and Kelly Woodruff. The eight Tar Heel senior men are Ryan Funderburk, Robby Swendiman, Zach Swartz, Keith Laabs, Mark Mohr, Philip Owen, Brandon Suddreth and John Sands.

Miami Falls to FAU, 184.5-115.5, To Even Season Series

CORAL GABLES, Fla. - After coming away with a 165.5-132.5 win over Florida Atlantic in the fall, the University of Miami swimming and diving team was looking for the season sweep Saturday but the Owls picked up a 184.5-115.5 win over the Hurricanes at the FAU Pool in UM's final meet before the 2008 ACC Championships.

Ryann Labreche, Annika Saarnak, Capria DeVenuto and Brittany Viola all picked up individual wins for Miami, as the `Canes dropped to 8-3 on the season.

Labreche won the 1650-yard freestyle event in a time of 17:19.84, beating out second place finisher, FAU's Brittany Fabry, who came in at 17:23.37. Saarnak won the 200-yard freestyle event in her fastest time of the season, 1:53.07, and DeVenuto won the 100-yard butterfly, coming in at 1:01.06.

Maryland Wraps Up Terrapin Invitational

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland swimming and diving teams hosted the Testudo Invitational Friday and Saturday. The Terps swam unattached to the collegiate program per NCAA rules.

Six club-swimming teams faced the Terps in the 30 heat, two-day event. The Aqua Hoya Swim Club, Blue Waves Swim Team, Hydro-Sonic Timburones, Joe Flaherty's Dolphins, Rockville Montgomery Swim Club and York's Swim Club competed against the Terps, representing their individual club programs and the US Swimming Club.

"It was good for our swimmers to bring others swimmers into the university," said Interim Head Coach Jarod Schroeder.

The Terrapins chose not to swim in their usual events, and to instead improve on other strokes.
