March 24, 2008 Miami's Viola Wins National Championship In Platform Diving COLUMBUS, Ohio - University of Miami sophomore Brittany Viola became just the third women's diver in UM history to win an NCAA Championship with a first place finish of 362.60 in the platform finals of the 2008 NCAA Division I Women's Swimming and Diving Championships at Ohio State University's McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion Saturday. Viola joins Jenny Keim, who owns UM's two most recent titles with wins in the 10-meter platform in 2000 and the three-meter springboard in 1999, and Wendy Williams, who won the program's first championship in the 1999 platform, as the only Hurricanes to have won an NCAA women's diving title. "I'm so proud of Brittany for the way she performed tonight," head diving coach Randy Ableman said. "I could see it in her eye that she wanted this title and she was determined to go out there and get it. She has worked so hard to get to this point, it was just so gratifying to see it all pay off for her."
COLUMBUS, Ohio - Virginia Tech's Jessica Botzum (Sr., Raleigh, N.C.) ended her collegiate career on a high note as she broke her own ACC record in the 200-yard breaststroke on the final day of the 2008 Women's NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships to become a five-time All-American, helping the H2Okies finish in 23rd-place. In total, Tech had 42 points after Botzum finished sixth in the 200 breast with a new ACC record time of 2:10.13 on Saturday night for 13 points, topping her previous record mark of 2:10.87. She added 14 on Friday with a fifth-place result in the 100 breast, while Sara Smith (Jr., McGaheysville, Va.) scored one point by taking 16th in the 50 free on Thursday night. Both swimmers along with Megan Newell (Jr., Ashburn, Va.) and Jordan McHorney (Jr., Virginia Beach, Va.) swam the previous two days in the 200 and 400 medley relay, finishing 13th and 14th, respectively, for a total of 14 points.
Arizona won the team competition with 484 points, followed by Auburn (348) and Standford (343) taking second and third-place, respectively. In total, nine ACC schools scored points with Virginia edging out Tech for the lead with 50 at 20th-place overall. Miami finished 27th with 32, while Georgia Tech took 30th with 21 points.
COLUMBUS, Ohio - Florida State sophomore Aleia Monden earned Honorable Mention All-American honors on the final day of the 2008 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships in Columbus, Ohio. "She did great, I am really happy for her," FSU diving coach Patrick Jeffrey said. "I was really pleased just to get Aleia [Monden] to this meet and to be an All-American and score points for our team is tremendous." Monden placed 11th on the platform scoring 251.81 points in the consolation finals to earn her first career top 16 finish at the NCAA Championships. The Mililani, Hawaii native improved upon her 13th place finish in the preliminary round where she scored 246.95 points. Monden's second dive, a back two-and-a-half somersault in the pike position earned her 63.80 points and was her best dive of the competition.
COLUMBUS, Ohio - Senior Stephanie England placed 12th in the platform diving event at the NCAA Women's Swimming & Diving Championships Saturday night at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion on the campus of Ohio State University. England scored 260.65 points in prelims and then 251.80 points in the finals session. Overall, this was a good experience for us," head coach Stu Wilson said. "I am very proud of this entire team. To record the best finish in school history is a testament to the whole team and how hard everyone worked this season. The divers did a great job this weekend and I am looking forward to improving on this next season." The Jackets scored 21 points, good for 30th place. It marked the best finish in school history. The University of Arizona won the meet with 484 team points during the three-day competition. Auburn (348) finished second and Stanford (343) finished third.
COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Virginia women's swimming team closed out 2008 NCAA Championships with more solid performances, including a fourth-place finish in the 200 fly from first-year Liz Shaw. Virginia racked up a total of 50 points during the three-day meet to finish in 20th place. Arizona won title with 484 team points while Auburn (348) finished second and Stanford (343) finished third. The meet was hosted by Ohio State and was held in the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion. Shaw earned first team All-American honors in the 200 fly, finishing fourth with a time of 1:54.98. Her mark shattered the conference record she set in the ACC Championships earlier this season. Third-year Megan Evo also participated in the finals of the 200 fly, finishing in 1:57.28 and taking 12th place to garner honorable mention All-America accolades.
COLUMBUS, Ohio - University of North Carolina junior women's swimmer Whitney Sprague of Bronxville, N.Y., captured second place Saturday night in the 1650-yard freestyle at the 2008 NCAA Division I Women's Swimming and Diving Championships at The Ohio State University. It is the second successive Top 3 finish for Sprague in the event at the NCAA Championships. Sprague was third in the event last year. "Whitney prepared very well and was put up against some very strong competition," said University of North Carolina head coach Rich DeSelm. "She swam the third best time of her career to finish in second place, up a couple notches from last year. She is an awesome competitor and represented UNC well. Even after she had a little trouble in the 500 on Thursday, she swam a great race today. We are very, very proud of her."
COLUMBUS, Ohio - Four members of the Clemson Women's Swimming team competed in the NCAA Championships from March 20-22 at Ohio State's McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion. Michelle Parkhurst led the way, earning honorable mention All-American honors, finishing 16th in the 200 free. Head Coach Christopher Ip said, ""We were excited that we made the NCAAs and had some good swims and we were able to score." Parkhurst, Rachel Regone, Lauren Sindall, and Alexandra Allen all competed for the Tigers. On day one, the group touched in at 1:29.97 in the 200 free relay preliminaries, which would have been 12th. However, the Tigers were disqualified due to a false start, negating their time, even though it would have been the fastest in ACC history, breaking their own mark set last month at the ACC championships.
DURHAM, N.C. - Freshman Ashley Twichell was in action at the 2008 NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships this weekend, held at McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion and hosted by The Ohio State University, and closed out the competition with a 16th-place showing in the 1650 freestyle to earn All-America honors. The Fayetteville, N.Y., native touched in 16:16.18 for the scoring finish in the mile on Saturday and was also in action on Friday in the 200 freestyle prelims, as she finished 68th with a time of 1:49.73. Twichell placed 26th in the 500 free prelims on Thursday with a mark of 4:45.40, which was four spots in front of her seeded time, as she was ranked 30th heading into the race.
COLUMBUS, Ohio - Kristin Davies pulled off a memorable performance on the third and final day of the NCAA Championships on Saturday, March 22, with a 243.20 score in the platform finals. The junior from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, qualified as an honorable mention All-America with the 13th-place finish. That placement stands as one of the top all-time finishes at the NCAA Championships on the women's end in school history. Davies is the first women's diver at NC State to compete at the NCAA Championships since Molly Culberson made the trip in 2005. "Kristin was terrific," said head diving coach Ted Hautau. "She had an outstanding year and performed very well at the NCAA Championships. She is building a really solid foundation for the future of our program." |
