• 2008 ACC Outdoor Track & Field Championship Site

ATLANTA, Ga. - For the fourth year in a row, and the sixth time in the last seven years, the Florida State men earned the team title at the 2008 Atlantic Coast Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships, held at George C. Griffin Track on the campus of Georgia Tech. Virginia Tech, which has now won the team championship at each of the last two ACC indoor and outdoor championships, seized the team title on the women's side.

The Seminoles, going for their sixth-ever ACC outdoor championship, had to fend off a stiff challenge from 2004 league champion Clemson, which finished second in the team standings for the fourth year in a row. Florida State, which was in third-place overall after two days of competition, was led on Saturday by individual title-winners Drew Brunson and Charles Clark, and the first-place 4X400-meter relay team.

Brunson, who was the ACC and NCAA indoor champion in the 60-meter hurdles, won yet another league championship in Saturday's 110-meter hurdles with a time of 13.94 seconds. Clark took first-place in the 200-meter dash, posting the nation's second fastest time of the outdoor season with a 20.59 finish. The Seminoles' 4X400 relay team, made up of Kevin Williams, Michael Ray Garvin, Charles Clark and Brandon Byram, took the ACC title with a league season-best time of 3:05.38.

The `Noles also finished well in several of Saturday's other events, placing second in the 800-meter run, the 4X100-meter relay, the 400-meter hurdles and the 5,000-meter run. In all, FSU placed at least one student-athlete among the top three in 11 of the championship's 21 events.

Placing behind FSU and Clemson in third-place was NC State, followed by Virginia and North Carolina, in fourth- and fifth-places, respectively. Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech, Maryland, Miami, Duke, Wake Forest and Boston College filled out the rest of the field, coming in sixth through 12th.

Virginia Tech, which entered this week ranked tenth nationally, seized first-place on the championship's first day of events and never looked back. Earning individual titles this week for the Hokies were Natalie Sherbak in the 10,000-meter run, Erin Mahony in the pole vault, Brittany Pryor in the shot put, Dorotea Habazin in the hammer throw, Kristi Castlin in the 100-meter hurdles, and Queen Harrison in the 400-meter hurdles. Tech's 4X400-meter relay team also finished first, giving the team seven individual ACC titles.

Most impressive on Saturday was the sophomore duo of Castlin and Harrison, who combined to earn three individual championships and 55 points for the Hokies. Castlin, who owns the league's all-time record in the 100-meter hurdles, narrowly edged Harrison in the event for a 1-2 Hokie sweep, then went on to finish third in the 100-meter dash and sixth in the 200. Harrison set a league record with an outstanding 55.16 finish en route to the championship in the 400-meter hurdles, before running the opening leg of the first-place 4X400 relay team. The two also teamed up on the 4X100 relay team, which would take second-place overall.

Finishing the three-day ACC championship in second-place were the Miami Hurricanes, followed by North Carolina, Florida State and Virginia. Georgia Tech, Clemson, Boston College, Maryland and Wake Forest rounded out the top 10.

Next on the schedule for the majority of the league's 12 track squads are next week's Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Penn. The NCAA East Regional Meet will take place on May 30-31, followed by the NCAA Championships, which will be held June 11-14 in Des Moines, Iowa.
