![]() Track & Field ACCtion: Weekend of May 17-18 May 18, 2008 Clemson's Moss Records Regional Mark in 400m Saturday at Georgia Tech ATLANTA - Clemson had four NCAA regional-qualifying performances on day two at the Georgia Tech Invitational, including the first-ever for red-shirt freshman Miller Moss. The Tigers now have 16 individuals who have qualified for regionals. C.J. Spiller was runner-up in the 100m dash to Michael Ray Garvin of Florida State. Spiller ran a 10.43 on Saturday. Travis Padgett was fourth in the 200m dash, turning in a time of 20.92 seconds. Spiller had a time of 21.19 and was 12th overall. Trenton Guy (21.76) also competed in the 200m dash. Moss added to Clemson's strong list of regional qualifiers. He posted a personal best time of 47.15 in the quarter mile, topping his previous best of 47.62 run last weekend in Clemson. Moss finished 14th in the field of 43 runners. Travis Swaggard (54.11) and Andrew Porter (54.40) ran the 400m hurdles Saturday afternoon.
ATLANTA - Anastasia Wilson and April Sinkler both posted regional-qualifying performances in the high jump to lead the Clemson women's track & field team at the Georgia Tech Invitational over the weekend. Wilson and Sinkler tied for first in the event, clearing 5'8.75". The height moves both student-athletes into a tie for second place in Clemson's record books in the high jump. Wilson's previous outdoor best had been a jump of 5'7.75" at the ACC Championships. Sinkler's mark this weekend was her first in the outdoor high jump. Caroline Kennedy also will advance to the East Region Championships, her second straight year doing so in the pole vault. The Orlando, FL native cleared a personal best 12'7.5" and finished in third place Saturday. Her mark ranks fourth in Clemson history for the outdoor pole vault.
Five Blue Devils Place & Two Qualify For Finals At IC4A's & ECAC's DURHAM, N.C. - The Duke Track and Field team competed in the first two days of the ECAC and IC4A Championships in Princeton, N.J., on Friday and Saturday. The women are currently in seventh place with 16.5 points and the men rank 19th with six team points. The 3,000m steeplechase on Friday night saw junior Patricia Loughlin take second place in a time of 10:31.54. Not only was that a personal best, but it moved Loughlin up to second place on the Duke records list and earned the team eight points. Loughlin qualified for the NCAA Regionals for the second time this season and earned All-East honors. Junior Tyler Clarke completed the decathlon on Friday and Saturday in Princeton. Clarke placed third with a score of 6,642. That picked up six points for Duke and won him All-East accolades. The decathlon consists of the 100m, long jump, shot put, high jump, 400m, 110m high hurdles, discus throw, pole vault, javelin throw and 1,500m.
ATLANTA - With two weeks remaining until the NCAA East Regional Championships, Florida State capped the regular outdoor season off with a big showing at the Georgia Tech Invitational. The Seminoles picked up a new regional mark from senior Walter Dix and bested or repeated 21 more in Atlanta at the two-day competition. In his first race since injuring his hamstring at the Seminole Invitational, Dix set his second regional mark of the season--his first in the 200m dash. Dix was the top collegiate finisher in the event with a third-place 20.90 mark. "We had some good things today," said head coach Bob Braman. "We're starting to put the pieces together."
ATLANTA - The Georgia Tech men's and women's track & field teams achieved 10 NCAA Regional qualifying marks on the second day of the Georgia Tech Invitational at the George C. Griffin Track. Senior Shantia Moss crossed the line third in the women's 100-meter hurdles final with a personal-best and NCAA Regional qualifying time of 13.01. Her mark is tied for the fourth-best in the nation this outdoor season. Freshman Leslie Njoku ran a personal-best and NCAA Regional qualifying mark of 59.02 for a fourth-place finish in the women' 400-meter hurdles. In the women's 100-meter final, junior Jacqua Williams placed fourth with an NCAA Regional qualifying time of 11.68. Williams also finished second in the women's 200-meter dash and was the top collegiate finisher with a season-best and NCAA Regional qualifying time of 23.49.
PRINCETON, N.J. - After earning 39 total points, the University of Maryland women's track and field team finished sixth among 47 teams at the ECAC Championships this weekend. Day three was highlighted by Kiani Profit's second-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles. The freshman posted an NCAA Regional-qualifying time of 1:00.49 in the event. Teammate Chanel Williams also placed in the event, coming in sixth with a time of 1:02.36. Senior Jillian Anwah also posted a second-place finish, after posting an NCAA Regional-qualifying and career-best mark of 50-07.25 in the shot put. Anwah also finished fifth in the discus, throwing for 157-06, another NCAA Regional mark. In the high jump, Toni Aluko finished fourth, matching her season-best jump of 5-08.75.
ATLANTA - The University of Miami men's track and field team completed their last regular season meet of the year, Saturday at the Georgia Tech Invitational at George C. Griffin Field, with two Hurricanes winning events in career-best times. Four-time All-American Tim Harris lowered his No. 1 collegiate time in the 800-meters with a winning time of 1:47.12. Harris has won all three 800-meter races he has been in this season, including his third outdoor and sixth overall ACC Title. Patrick O'Donnell also ran in the event, running his third best time of the season at 1:53.62. Cory Nelms ran a new personal best in the finals of the 110-meter hurdles, winning the event with his eighth regional time of the season.
ATLANTA - The 12th-ranked University of Miami women's track and field team completed their last regular season meet of the year, Saturday at the Georgia Tech Invitational at George C. Griffin Field, finishing the day with eight NCAA Regional Qualifying marks. After nearly a month break, four-time All-Americans Krista Simkins returned to the track and picked up her third regional time of the season in the 400-meters with a 53.86. Freshman Tameka Jameson also ran her third regional time of the season in 54.51 seconds. In her last opportunity to pick up a regional time in the 800-meters before the NCAA East Region Championships in two weeks, junior All-American Ena Leufroy did just that in running her best time of the year with a 2:09.23.
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Junior Brie Felnagle turned in a stellar performance in the 1500-meter run on Saturday as she broke her own school record as she clocked a 4:08.54 at the UNC Elite Meet in Chapel Hill. Felnagle's time is the top collegiate effort of the year by nearly four seconds and trails only Shannon Rowbury's 4:07.59 in the United States rankings in 2008. Six other Tar Heels earned seven regional marks on the day at the Irwin Belk Track at Fetzer Field. Felnagle now owns a top four national time in both the 800 and 1500 along with a top 25 time in the 5000 and has put herself in a good position for the NCAA East Regional in two weeks. Felnagle held the previous Carolina-best outdoor mark in the 1500 with a 4:09.93 in 2007. Jocelyn White turned in a personal-best effort in the discus throw as she tallied a mark of 180-02 to earn another regional mark, while freshman Mary Angell joined the party with a toss of 164-00 for a regional mark of her own.
ATLANTA - DeMiracle Washington finished sixth at the Georgia Tech Invite with a mark of 41'01.75", her second-longest jump of the season and fourth NCAA Regional mark on the season in the event. Gabrielle Daniel and Mattie Bethea also competed at the UNC Elite Meet on Saturday. Bethea won the high jump with a mark of 5'07.00", just off of what would have been her third NCAA Regional qualifying mark this season. Gabrielle Daniel ran in both the 200m and 400m, finishing second and fifth, respectively. She ran a season-high 24.98 to finish second in the 200m, and followed that with a 57.87 to take fifth in the 400m.
PRINCETON, N.J. - The Virginia men's and women's track and field teams both finished second at the ECAC/IC4A Championships Sunday in Princeton, N.J. The men's 4x100m relay defended its 2007 title, winning the event in 41.03 and anchored the men's team into second place with 55 points, just seven behind Liberty's 62. For the women, Ayla Smith turned in a time of 1:00.08 to win the ECAC 400m hurdles, leading the squad to second with 53 points. Connecticut's women won the championship with 83 points. "Going into the weekend, this was not a meet that we were looking to win," head coach Randy Bungard said. "We wanted to compete to improve our times to try to reach regional qualifying marks and along the way, we scored a lot of points. "Our men competed hard all three days and put us in a position to have a shot at winning the championship. Each of the relays ran with a purpose and I'm proud of the way our guys went after it, but Liberty is a very good team that has a lot of depth and they just barely beat us today."
ATLANTA - Sophomore sprinter Queen Harrison improved her own 400-meter dash school record and the Virginia Tech track & field team wrapped up its final meet before the NCAA East Regional Championships Saturday in the Georgia Tech Invitational at the George C. Griffin Track. Nine different Tech athletes turned in season-best performances in six different events on the final day of competition. The sixth-ranked women's team's performance was led by Harrison, who reset her 400-meter dash record with a time of 52.88 seconds. The Richmond, Va., native beat her previous record mark by .36 seconds and was the top collegiate finisher in the event. Shakirra Pinnock ran the race in 58.76 seconds and finished 40th. Nobel Iyebote represented Tech in the men's section with a 40th-place finish in a time 50.46 seconds. |
