Boston College Baseball Takes Twinbill From Duke

BROCKTON, Mass. - Terry Doyle and Dan Houston each pitched seven-inning gems to help Boston College sweep a doubleheader against Duke on Saturday afternoon at Campanelli Stadium. The Eagles took the first game, 3-2 and pitched a shutout in game two, 6-0. BC improved to 15-14, 4-10 in the ACC, while Duke now owns a 21-9 overall record, 4-9 in ACC action.

Game 1: BC 3, Duke 2

Terry Doyle racked up seven strikeouts in seven innings of work and Barry Butera and John Spatola each collected two hits to lead Boston College past the Duke Blue Devils, 3-2, in game one of the doubleheader.

Doyle (3-3) scattered seven hits in his seventh start of the season. His seven innings of work marked a season-high in ACC competition for the right-hander this year.

Nick Asselin fired two scoreless innings of relief with two strikeouts to earn his first career save.

Barry Butera and John Spatola each went 2-for-4 with a RBI on the afternoon. Garret Smith added a hit, two runs scored and a RBI while Sam Shaughnessy went 1-for-1 with a RBI and three walks in the game one win.

Game 2: BC 6, Duke 0

BC starter Dan Houston (2-1) tossed seven shutout innings and scattered four hits with three strikeouts to earn the victory in a 6-0 win in game two against the Blue Devils.

Asselin pitched two scoreless innings to help the Eagles sweep the doubleheader from Duke.

Belfiore and Shaughnessy each went 2-for-4 with a double and RBI to lead the Eagles' offense.

The Eagles put the pressure on Duke starter Will Currier in the first inning. Mickey Wiswall drew a bases loaded walk, followed by a sac fly by Smith to plate Tony Sanchez and take the 2-0 lead.

Maryland Baseball Wins Wet Affair at Virginia Tech, 13-8

BLACKSBURG, Va. - The University of Maryland baseball team scored four first-inning runs and survived a brief Virginia Tech scare in the middle innings to roll to a 13-8 victory at a rainy English Field Saturday night.

For the second consecutive game, the Terps (17-14, 4-10 ACC) scored four first-inning runs. Third baseman Mike Murphy (Silver Spring, Md./Georgetown Prep) got things started with a solo home run to right-center field off Hokies starter David Cross. It was Murphy's team-leading eighth home run of the season and second in as many games. Left fielder Gerry Spessard (Hagerstown, Md./Smithsburg) added three more later in the frame with a three-run shot to right field, a no-doubter.

The Terps seemed to be cruising, up 8-2 heading into the bottom of the fourth, but the Hokies (11-19, 1-13 ACC) staged a rally, partially due to Maryland starting pitcher Jensen Pupa (Germantown, Md./Northwest) having to leave the game due to a shoulder injury.

Virginia Tech scored four runs to turn a six-run deficit into a two-run deficit and make things interesting.

Despite leaving the mound due to injury, Pupa remained in the lineup as the designated hitter and Pupa added two runs in the top of the fifth with a two-run double down the right field line.

Miami uses eight-run eighth to turn back Clemson, 15-5
