May 14, 2008 Boston College Storms Back Against Huskies, 11-9 CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Eric Campbell had three extra-base hits and four RBIs to help Boston College (25-25) come from behind and defeat Connecticut (24-28), 11-9, on Tuesday afternoon at Commander Shea Field. The Eagles trailed 8-3 heading into the bottom of the fourth, but the BC bullpen held the Huskies lineup to one run in final five frames. BC scored a run in the fourth, two runs in the sixth and four runs in the seventh to earn the come-from-behind victory. Campbell went 3-for-5 at the dish with two doubles, a triple and four RBIs to lead the offense. Leadoff hitter Barry Butera reached base in all six plate appearances. The sophomore collected two hits, two RBIs, walked twice and was hit by a pitch twice.
CLEMSON, S.C. - Stan Widmann hit two homers with five RBIs, and Clemson scored seven runs in the second inning on its way to a 12-6 win over College of Charleston in front of 4,308 fans at Doug Kingsmore Stadium on Tuesday night. Clemson improved to 27-25-1, while the Cougars fell to 34-18. The Tigers improved to 20-0 all-time against College of Charleston as well. Tiger reliever Casey Harman (1-5) pitched 2.0 scoreless innings, giving up one hit and one walk with three strikeouts to earn the win. Cougar starter Clay Caulfield (4-3), a former Clemson signee, gave up four runs on four hits with one walk and two strikeouts in 1.0 innings pitched to take the loss. Both teams sent out seven pitchers apiece to the mound. A total of 43 players combined played in the game as well. The Tigers tallied 10 hits in their regular-season home finale. Widmann had a big night at the plate for Clemson with two multi-run homers and five RBIs. Matt Sanders was 2-for-3 with two RBIs, while Jeff Schaus added a two-run homer.
The Tigers jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. Mike Freeman drew a leadoff walk before Schaus crushed his first career homer over the fence in left-center.
DURHAM, N.C. - Nate Freiman stole the spotlight on Senior Night and went 5-for-5 with two home runs, two doubles and three RBI to lead Duke to a 10-5 win over Campbell Tuesday evening at Jack Coombs Field that locked up a perfect 27-0 non-conference record for the Blue Devils. Led by Freiman's bat, Duke (35-17-1, 8-17-1 ACC) turned in its first season in school history without a non-conference loss after defeating all 13 non-conference opponents in 2008. Freiman's outing on Tuesday marked his third multi-home run game of the season and the first five-hit game of his three-year career. The homers were the 10th and 11th of the season for Duke's 6-8, 240 pound first baseman, who becomes the first Blue Devil since 1998 to reach double digit home runs. He also jumped to 11th place on Duke's all-time home run list with 23 round trippers in his career.
NEWARK, Del. - Sophomore Scott Swinson threw the sixth no-hitter in Maryland baseball history, striking out a career-high 10 batters as the University of Maryland baseball team defeated Delaware, 4-0, in its season finale to end the season with 30 wins. It is the only the second 30-win season in school history. The Terps' most recent no-hitter came last season when six players combined to no-hit Coppin State, but Swinson's no-hitter was the first solo no-hitter since John Rayne no-hit Virginia April 25, 1992. Bob Grossman threw two no-hitters in his Maryland career, both in 1972, and Rich Fillings also threw a no-hitter in 1972 against Clemson. Delaware's best chance at breaking up the no-hitter came with one out in the bottom of the eighth inning. Ryan Reed hit a sinking liner to right-center field, but right fielder AJ Casario (Pine Hill, N.J./Overbrook) snagged the ball out of the air with a head-on dive.
CORAL GABLES, Fla. - Sophomore right-hander David Gutierrez struck out five in six innings and junior first baseman Yonder Alonso homered for the 16th time - the eventual game winner - as No. 1 Miami topped North Florida, 5-2, Tuesday night at Mark Light Field in the final nonconference game of the regular season. Jemile Weeks added a pair of doubles for the Hurricanes, who improved to 42-6 on the season before their big showdown with No. 2 North Carolina. David Gutierrez remained perfect on the season running his record to 3-0. He allowed just one earned run on three hits and walked two. Anthony Nalepa, P.J. Fisher, Kyle Bellamy and Carlos Gutierrez combined to toss the final three innings. Alonso went 2-for-2 with two runs scored, two RBI and two walks. He gave Miami the lead for good with a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Weeks went 2-for-4 with two doubles and a run scored.
CARY, N.C. - No. 2 North Carolina got a game-tying solo home run from Kyle Shelton in the sixth inning and scratched out three runs in the seventh to score a 4-1 win over Winthrop Tuesday in the regular season home finale at Cary's USA Baseball National Training Complex. The Tar Heels improved to 43-9 with their eighth straight non-conference victory, while Winthrop dropped to 22-31 with the loss. Shelton was 2-for-3 with a home run in the sixth and a single in the seventh for his third straight multi-hit game and his fifth in the last six games. Garrett Gore chipped in with two hits on the night. The reigning ACC Pitcher of the Week, Rob Wooten (5-1) stranded the go-ahead run at third base in the seventh and struck out two of the three batters he faced to earn his fourth win in his last seven appearances. Wooten was one of eight Tar Heels to take the mound on the night on a designated staff day. Rob Catapano, Colin Bates, Brian Moran, Logan Munson, Nate Striz and Tyler Trice all logged scoreless outings.
RALEIGH, N.C. - Pat Ferguson, Matt Payne, Marcus Jones and Dallas Poulk homered and drove in a combined 13 runs to pace No. 18 NC State to a 17-6 victory over North Carolina A&T Tuesday afternoon in the home finale at Doak Field at Dail Park. NC State improves to 36-16 on the season, while North Carolina A&T drops below the .500 mark at 27-28. Ferguson led the hit parade with a 2-for-3 afternoon with three runs scored and a season-best five RBI. Tommi Foschi went 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI, while Payne, Jones and Ryan Pond each had two hits apiece for the Wolfpack. For about half the game the outcome was certainly in doubt as the Aggies grabbed an early lead.
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The No. 28 Virginia baseball scored single runs in the eighth and ninth inning to send its Tuesday night game with VMI to extra innings, then won it in the 11th inning on a John Barr (Fr., Ivyland, Pa.) single, coupled with a VMI throwing error, as the Cavaliers prevailed, 6-5, at Davenport Field. Franco Valdes (So., Miami, Fla.) led off the 11th with a double to left-center field. Corey Hunt (So., Charlottesville, Va.) came on to pinch run, and one out later, Barr hit a tough grounder deep in the hole at second base. The throw to first was errant and allowed Hunt to scamper home with the winning run. Virginia (35-17) owned an early 3-1 lead, only to see the Keydets (26-23) rally to take a 5-3 lead in the fifth inning. From there, VMI managed just two more hits against the stingy UVa bullpen, which went 6.2 innings and allowed just three hits and three walks while striking out eight. Robert Morey (Fr., Virginia Beach, Va.) captured the win and went to 2-0 after pitching a scoreless 11th inning.
BLACKSBURG, Va. - Virginia Tech doubled its way to an early lead and went on to defeat William & Mary 10-5 in its final non-conference baseball game at English Field on Tuesday. Tech improved to 22-30 with the victory, while W&M is now 35-16. Tech collected five doubles in building a 7-2 lead after just two innings and went on to a 15-hit game that saw six Hokies finish with two or more hits. Sean Ryan (Ashburn, Va.) led the way with a 3-for-5 outing that included a double, two runs scored and one batted in. Senior left fielder Jose Cueto (Miami, Fla.) had a homer, a double, two RBI and two runs scored. Tech also got two hits and two RBI from right fielder Klint Reed (Chesterfield, Va.).
ATLANTA - Nick Montgomery and three relievers combined to scatter five hits, while Ryan Peisel homered to lift Georgia past Georgia Tech, 3-2, in the regular-season series finale between the two rivals Tuesday night at Turner Field. The sixth Spring Baseball Classic for Kids, pitting the two teams in one of their regular season meetings, drew 22,599 fans, the second highest attendance in the history of the event. The win helped Georgia (34-17-1) avoid a regular-season sweep at the hands of Tech (36-16). The Jackets had defeated the Bulldogs 9-4 in Atlanta on April 9 and 11-1 in Athens last Wednesday.
ELON, N.C. - Elon rallied for three runs in the bottom of the ninth to post a 16-15 walk-off defeat of Wake Forest Tuesday afternoon at Latham Park. The loss snapped the Demon Deacons six-game winning streak and dropped the squad to 22-28 on the year. The Phoenix move to 39-16 on the season with the win. Outs were at a premium as both teams traded leads throughout the game. The Deacons looked to have the final word as they rallied for three runs over the final two innings to take a 15-13 advantage heading into the bottom of the ninth. However, the Phoenix had other plans. Chase Austin led off with a solo home run against closer Phil Negus to cut the deficit in half. |
