Reed's Hat Trick Leads No. 6 Terps Over Providence

Hat tricks are becoming old hat for Travis Reed. The freshman attackman netted his third straight hat trick to help lead the No. 6 Maryland men's lacrosse team to a dominating 13-5 win over Providence in the Terps' 2008 home opener Monday afternoon at Ludwig Field.

Reed, a native of Cockeysville, Md., scored three times, including an extra-man goal that proved to be the eventual game-winner, in just over three minutes of play from the end of the first quarter to less than a minute into the second. Reed is the first Terrapin since Brendan Healy in 2006 to have a hat trick in three consecutive games. Reed's scores came in the middle of an 8-0 Maryland run that the Terps never looked back from.

The Maryland offense was bottled up at the beginning of the game, but junior All-America midfielder Dan Groot started the ball rolling at the 6:00 mark with a runner along the left alley for a 1-0 Terrapin lead. Groot picked up an assist on the next Maryland score, an extra-man goal by senior midfielder Max Ritz.

Freshman attackman Ryan Young then scored his first of two goals on the day off an assist from fellow freshman Grant Catalino, Reed's back-to-back-to-back goals gave the Terrapins a 6-0 lead just seconds into the second quarter.

Junior midfielder Jeremy Sieverts scored off of an assist from freshman Brett Weiss. The 8-0 run was capped off by a nice finish by junior attackman Scott Tompkins, who buried a shot from the left alley following a terrific skip-pass from freshman midfielder Tony Mendes.
