Cavaliers Rally to Stun North Carolina in OT

CHAPEL HILL, NC--Steve Giannone scored on a rebound with 1:01 remaining in overtime to send Virginia past North Carolina 12-11 in the rain at Fetzer Field Saturday.

The overtime victory is Virginia's third of the season and the second in a row over the Tar Heels.

The fourth-ranked Cavaliers got back on the winning track following last week's disappointing loss to Maryland improve to 10-1 this season with their first ACC victory of the year. The sixth-ranked Tar Heels fall to 7-3 this season, including 0-3 in the ACC.

Giannone's goal capped a remarkable rally by the Cavaliers, who trailed 11-8 with less than three-and-a-half minutes to play.

Virginia inched back in the final minutes with three consecutive goals to send the game to overtime. Giannone notched his first goal of the afternoon with 3:22 remaining in regulation.

The Cavaliers won the ensuing faceoff and pulled closer on Ben Rubeor's third goal of the game with 2:43 to play.

Greer's Six Goals Lead No. 2 Duke Past No. 11 Johns Hopkins, 17-6

DURHAM, N.C. -- Zack Greer scored six goals and Matt Danowski handed out six assists to become the ACC's all-time leader in that catagory as second-ranked Duke defeated 11th-ranked Johns Hopkins, 17-6, in men's college lacrosse action as 4,291 fans looked on at Koskinen Stadium on Saturday night.

The Blue Devils improve to 11-1 on the year while the Blue Jays fall to 3-5. Duke has now won 17 straight and 20 of their last 21 home games. Since 2005, the Blue Devils are 51-9 overall and 27-9 versus ranked opponents.

Greer's six goals increase his NCAA-leading total to 39 this season. In addition, he moved into seventh place on the NCAA's all-time chart and now has 180 career tallies. Danowski, who passed former Virginia standout Tim Whiteley (159 from 1993-96) for the top spot on the ACC's career assist chart, paces the nation with his 36 helpers on the year and jumped to seventh place on the NCAA's all-time chart with his 163 career assists.

No. 3 Maryland Drops 5-4 Decision To No. 9 Navy

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland men's lacrosse team mounted a valiant comeback attempt, but it fell one goal short in a 5-4 loss to No. 9 Navy Friday night in front of 7,106 fans at Chevy Chase Bank Field at Byrd Stadium.

The Midshipmen built a 5-0 lead through the first 30 minutes of play, but the Terps came out from halftime determined to climb back into the contest.

The Terrapins were finally able to break through a staunch Navy defense at the 4:04 mark of the third quarter. Freshman attackman Ryan Young picked up the first of his two assists by dumping a pass to the right side of the crease where senior midfielder Drew Evans banged it home to get the Terps on the board.
