![]() ACC Earns Three of the Top Four Seeds in 2008 NCAA Men's Lacrosse Championship Field May 5, 2008
GREENSBORO, N.C. - Led by number one seed Duke, the Atlantic Coast Conference will have 100 percent representation in the upcoming 2008 NCAA Men's Lacrosse Championship, as announced Sunday evening. Virginia received the No. 2 seed, while North Carolina and Maryland were seeded fourth and seventh, respectively. The Blue Devils, owners of a 16-1 overall record, will make their 12th appearance in the NCAA Tournament as the squad hosts Loyola on Saturday, May 10 at 2:30 p.m. at Koskinen Stadium in Durham, N.C. Duke holds an all-time tournament record of 12-11, has reached the national semifinals three times (1997, 2005 & 2007) and advanced to the championship game in 2005 and 2007. The winner will battle the winner of the Cornell and Ohio State game in quarterfinals action. Second-seeded Virginia, which is 12-3 this season, will host UMBC in the first round Sunday, May 11, at 5 p.m. at Klöckner Stadium. Virginia, which won the national championship two years ago, has received a bid in 15 of the last 16 seasons and 31 times overall. The winner will face either Denver or Maryland in the quarterfinals at Navy on Sunday, May 18. North Carolina earned the No. 4 seed in the field of 16 teams and will play host to Navy Saturday, May 10, at 7:30 p.m. at Fetzer Field in a first-round game. The Tar Heels finished the regular season 8-5 and make their third NCAA appearance in the past five years under the tutelage of head coach John Haus. The winner will advance to the NCAA quarterfinals to play the winner of John Hopkins and Hofstra. For the second straight year, Maryland, which finished 9-5 on the season, has been selected as the No. 7 seed in the upcoming NCAA Tournament. The Terps will host Denver in the first round at Chevy Chase Bank Field at Byrd Stadium, Saturday, May 10, at noon in the tournament's first game. Maryland is making its 31st appearance in the NCAA Tournament, which is tied for second all-time.
Making 24 appearances in the title game, the ACC holds 10 NCAA titles as Virginia and North Carolina have four apiece. Maryland has two national championships (1973 and 1975), while 2006 national champion Virginia also won titles in 1972, 1999, 2003. The Tar Heels earned crowns in 1981, 1982, 1986 and 1991. The Division I semifinal and championship games will be held at Gillette Stadium, outside of Boston, Massachusetts, May 24 and 26.
