Men's Tennis ACCtion: Weekend of March 7-9 March 10, 2008 Miami Wins ACC Opener Over Georgia Tech ATLANTA - Vivek Subramanian battled back for the singles victory to clinch the match for the 24th-ranked University of Miami men's tennis team, as they defeated No. 39 Georgia Tech, 5-2, in the ACC opener for the Hurricanes on Friday afternoon. With the win, Miami improved to 7-2 overall and 1-0 in ACC play, while Georgia Tech fell to 9-3 for the season and 1-2 in the league. "That was a great team effort today," said head coach Mario Rincon. "Our guys played hard from top to bottom, and we had to put together a complete match like that to beat a team as strong as Georgia Tech." The Hurricanes claimed the 1-0 lead after winning the No. 1 and 2 doubles matches. The 15th-ranked duo of All-American Daniel Vallverdu and Carl Sundberg won their fifth-straight doubles match at No. 1 to improve to 8-1 in dual match play with an 8-6 decision over Georgia Tech's Scott Blackmon and Ryan Smith. CLEMSON, S.C. - With the match on the line, third-ranked All-American Daniel Vallverdu bounced back from a slow start to claim the win at the top-singles position, lifting the 24th-ranked University of Miami men's tennis team to its fourth-straight victory with a 4-3 defeat of No. 60 Clemson. With the win, Miami improved to 8-2 overall and remains undefeated in ACC play at 2-0. The Tigers fell to 9-8 overall and 0-2 in the conference. "We pulled out a great win today," said assistant Miami coach CJ Weber. "We dropped the doubles point, but the team pulled together and came back to win a great one. It certainly feels good to start out 2-0 in conference play."
No. 57 Terps Men's Tennis Dominates George Washington, 7-0 COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The No. 57 Maryland men's tennis team shut out George Washington, 7-0, Friday to win its third straight match and improve its home record to 7-0 on the season. Maryland (7-2) blanked an opponent for the fifth time this season, while George Washington (8-5) was shut out for the first time this year. Amit Inbar, Andrew Orban, David Kwon, Boris Fetbroyt and Nickolai Nielsen each won twice for the Terps, who captured every doubles match and failed to lose a set at singles for the second time this season (also vs. Villanova on Feb. 10).
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The No. 57 Maryland men's tennis team won two matches by way of shutout Saturday, first defeating Delaware 7-0, then beating UMBC 7-0. Maryland (9-2, 1-1) swept the doubles matches, and lost just one set in singles competition against Delaware (1-3). The Terps also won all three doubles matches against UMBC (6-3), and didn't drop a single set to the Retrievers. Maryland's Amit Inbar, Nickolai Nielsen, David Kwon and Michael Coleman earned wins at both singles and doubles in the match against Delaware, and five Maryland players, including Inbar, Nielsen, Kwon, Andrew Orban and Boris Fetbroyt won in both disciplines against UMBC.
AUSTIN, Texas - Florida State men's tennis began their Spring Break with a loss at No. 4 Texas at the Penick-Allison Tennis Center. The Seminoles fell to 9-2, 1-0 while the Longhorns raised to 13-2. Although the Seminoles lost, freshman Clint Bowles (Tampa, Fla.) upset the No. 36 player in the nation today, Saturday, March 8, 2008. The Seminoles were unable to score any points in doubles play as Texas won all three matches. On court one No. 12 Ed Corrie/Kellen Damico defeated the No. 30 doubles team of sophomore Jean-Yves Aubone (Miami, Fla.) and Bowles 8-5. Senior Sam Chang (Young-Ming, Taiwan) and junior Maciek Sykut fell 6-8 to No. 44 Luis Diaz Barringa and Miguel Reyes Varela on court two. On court three, sophomore Brad Mixson (Miami, Fla.) and junior Drew Bailey (Tallahassee, Fla.) lost to Dimitar Kutrovsky and Josh Zavala 6-8.
