Men's Tennis ACCtion: Friday, March 21 March 21, 2008 Duke Downs No. 20 Miami 5-2 For Second ACC Win CORAL GABLES, Fla. - After starting the season 0-7 against teams in the top-25 the Blue Devils' men's tennis team received their first victory against a top-25 foe with a 5-2 win at No. 20 Miami on Friday. Duke, ranked No. 66 in the nation, improved to 5-7 overall for the season and has started out 2-0 in the ACC. The Hurricanes fall to 9-4 overall and 2-2 in league play this season. The Blue Devils were playing on the road for their sixth straight match on the road. At the No. 1 doubles position, David Goulet and Christopher Price got Duke off to a good start with a 9-8 victory over Daniel Vallverdu and Carl Sundberg, who are ranked No. 24 in the ITA doubles rankings. It is the duo's second victory over a ranked doubles team this season as they improved to 11-9 overall and 6-6 in dual matches. WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The No. 29 Wake Forest men's tennis team earned its second Atlantic Coast Conference win of the season with a 6-1 decision over No. 53 Maryland on Friday afternoon. Wake Forest now stands at 10-6 overall with a 2-1 ACC mark, while Maryland fell to 9-4, 1-3. Mariusz Adamski and Jason Morgenstern teamed up for the first time this season in doubles and posted an 8-6 win at No. 3 to clinch the opening point for WFU. Andrew Brasseaux and Carlos Salmon notched the first win of the afternoon, nailing an 8-4 upset over Maryland's No. 40 Nickolai Nielson and Amit Inbar at No. 2.
NC State Sweeps Boston College RALEIGH, N.C. - The No. 54 NC State men's tennis team swept Boston College, 7-0, on Friday, March 21, at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center. The Pack won all three doubles matches and then sealed the win by taking all six singles. The win gives NC State its first ACC victory of the season, improving the season record to 8-8 (1-2 ACC). Jay Weinacker and James McGee teamed up to defeat Erik Kreutzer and Sam Wagner, 8-4, at No. 1, and the doubles tandem of David Chermak and Derek Stephens took down Jason Sechrist and Brian Garber, 8-0 at No. 2. David Rozek and Rob Lowe took the win over Adam Davison and Thomas Nolan, 8-4 at No. 3. No. 70 McGee came back in the third-set tiebreaker to defeat Nolan, 4-6, 6-0, 1-0 (10-7), at No. 1, and Weinacker swiftly took down Alex Rastorgouev, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 2. Stephens controlled Kreutzer for the win, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 3.
CLEMSON, S.C. - Derek DiFazio defeated Brandon Corace at number-five singles 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 and clinched the match in giving Clemson a 4-3 win over Virginia Tech in a men's Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Tennis match at Clemson, SC Friday afternoon. With the win, Clemson is now 12-11 overall and 1-3 in the ACC. Virginia Tech drops to 9-4 overall, and 2-2 in league play. Clemson won the doubles point and had a 1-0 lead over the Hokies. The Tigers took a 2-0 advantage when Ike Belk defeated Sebastien Jacques at number-four singles, 6-0, 6-3. Virginia Tech won at number-two singles as Nicolas Delgado defeated Gera Boryachinskiy 6-4, 6-2.
ATLANTA - The Virginia men's tennis team recorded its fourth consecutive shutout, defeating No. 41 Georgia Tech 7-0 Friday afternoon at the Bill Moore Tennis Center. The Cavaliers improve to 18-0 overall this season and 4-0 in the ACC. Virginia took a 1-0 lead in the match by taking the doubles point. Ted Angelinos (Athens, Greece) and Lee Singer (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) cruised to an 8-1 win at No. 3 doubles over Eliot Potvin and Miguel Muguruza. The Cavaliers clinched the opening point as Somdev Devvarman (Chennai, India) and Treat Huey (Alexandria, Va.) topped Scott Blackmon and Ryan Smith at the No. 1 position. In singles, the Cavaliers won all six matches, five in straight sets. Sanam Singh (Chandigarh, India) needed little time to record his 17th consecutive singles win, defeating Blackmon 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3 singles. Angelinos won his 15th consecutive singles match with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Doug Kenny at No. 6 singles.
