April 27, 2008 Walker's Walk-Off Leads Hokies to 5-2 Win Over North Carolina in 10 BLACKSBURG, Va. - Beth Walker's three-run home run in the 10th inning lifted the 18th-ranked Virginia Tech softball team to a wild 5-2 win over the No. 14 North Carolina Tar Heels Saturday afternoon at Tech Softball Park. The second game was halted in the bottom of the sixth inning due to heavy rain and will resume Sunday. The Hokies came out with a purpose early on, scoring a run in the third and fifth innings. In the third, Caroline Stolle led off with a walk and scored on Erin Ota's double to the left-center gap. In the fifth inning, the teams were called off the field for a 48-minute rain delay with Charisse Mariconda on first base after drawing a walk. After the delay concluded, she promptly stole second base and scored on Kelsey Hoffman's single to left field. Tech appeared to be cruising to the win in the sixth inning, but with two outs, Ota committed a fielding error on a routine play to extend the Tar Heels' inning. UNC made the Hokies pay, doubling to the gap to score one run and then singled up the middle to tie it up.
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Freshman pitcher Allison Gage pitched two complete games, lifting the Boston College softball team (29-26, 5-12 ACC) in a doubleheader sweep of Virginia (14-37, 5-15 ACC) Saturday afternoon at Commander Shea Field. Between the two games, Gage (16-15) faced 57 batters, allowed six earned runs on 14 hits, struck out four and walked three. On the season, Gage has pitched 17 complete games, has started 28 games and holds a 2.68 ERA.
BC-6, Virginia-2- The Eagles took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning against the Cavaliers in game one. Freshman Irene Delagrammaticas reached base on a single with one out. Fellow freshman Gemma Ypparila, starting the game as the designated player, then homered for the first time in her college career with two outs, scoring Delagrammaticas. Her homerun also gives her four RBIs on seven hits this season. ATLANTA - Junior Whitney Haller hit had a pair of two-run home runs to tie the all-time ACC record of 49 as Georgia Tech (28-28, 7-11 ACC) defeated Maryland (34-16, 6-10) 2-0 in game one of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Glenn Field. Game two was suspended due to severe weather with the Yellow Jackets leading 4-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning. It will be continued at Noon tomorrow before the scheduled rubber game of the series. Haller's blast in game two tied NC State's Jen Chamberlin atop the ACC charts. It also tied the game at two after Maryland had built a 2-0 lead in the third inning. Senior Whitney Humphreys (17-14) tossed a four-hit shutout in game one as she has now won nine of her last 10 starts. She did not walk a batter and struck out seven. In the first inning of game one, Maryland had runners at first and second with one out, but senior pitcher Whitney Humphreys was able to come back and strike out both Brittany Bessho and Kerry Hickey to end the inning. Then in the bottom of the inning, the Yellow Jackets struck for a pair of runs to take a 2-0 lead against Maryland ace Sarah Dooley.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - In game two on Saturday, NC State fought back from its loss earlier to take a 3-0 lead heading into the fifth inning. Never giving up, Florida State powered back to tie it up in the sixth and would go on to seal the victory with a late run in extra innings. The Seminoles improve to 35-23 and 11-9 in the ACC to clinch third place while the Wolfpack slips to 29-25 and 8-10 in the conference. NC State would score first off a base hit in the third, and two runs would cross in the fifth on a single to Whitney Buckmon in left field. The Seminoles would not answer until the fifth. Kelly Langston hit her first home run this season over the left field wall to bring the Seminoles within two in the bottom of the fifth. Closing the gap even further was Carly Wynn who scored on a sacrifice fly from Jessica Gilmore in the same inning. |
