Feb. 18, 2008 Garden City, N.Y. - Freshmen Richard Byrd (Central Islip, N.Y.) and Danielle Lyons (South Glastonbury, CT) have been named Adelphi's Athletes of the Week for the week of February 11, 2008. Byrd led Adelphi in scoring helping the Panthers to a 2-0 week. He averaged 18.0 points (12-22 fg) and 4.0 rebounds per game. Byrd scored 20 points and pulled down six rebounds in a 64-63 win over St. Thomas Aquinas and added 16 points, two rebounds, a block, an assist and a steal in a 50-46 road win over Philadelphia. The Panthers return to action on February 13 when they play host to Mercy College. Lyons placed 21st out of 69 runners in the college division of the 800 meter run at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational, crossing the line in a time of 2:16.89. While not only a new school record, Lyon's time is under the NCAA Division II provisional qualifying mark of 2:18.3, making her the first female track and field athlete to run a NCAA qualifying mark in over two decades. In addition Lyons captured Collegiate Track Conference (CTC) titles in the 800 meter run (2:20.18) and the 1000 meter run (3:00.83) on Sunday, February 10, earning a trip to the ECAC Championship meet in March. She also helped the women capture second overall at the CTC Indoor Championship meet. Adelphi returns to action on February 29 when they travel to the New Balance Track and Field Center in New York, New York to compete in the NYU Fastrack Invitational. |
