Avondale, PA - The Adelphi University golf team finished in fifth place in the 16-team Goldey-Beacom College Spring Invitational, held at Hartefeld National Golf Club in Avondale, Pennsylvania. The Panthers were led by junior Brant Kummerfeld (71-77 - 148), who finished in a tie for second place, and freshman Matt Demeo (77-78 - 155), who finished in a tie for 14th place. Millersville (300-298 - 598) won the team title, besting Indiana University-Pennsylvania (298-309 - 607) by nine strokes. Post (308-302 - 610), West Chester (307-307 - 614) and Adelphi (306-312 - 618) rounded out the top five, followed by Pace (310-309 - 619) and Dowling (304-318 - 622). Gavin Smith (77-70 - 147) of IUP won medalist honors in the 82-player field, edging Kummerfeld and three others by a single stroke. Kummerfeld, the second ranked individual in the Northeast, had his best outing as a Panther with the runner-up showing. In nine tournaments this year, the Adelphi junior has five top-five and seven top-ten finishes and has never finished outside the top-twenty in any event. Adelphi also received solid play from junior Oliver Hudesman (80-78 - 158), who drained a five-foot birdie putt on the first hole, senior Jantzen Vargas (78-84 - 162) and senior Joe Ostrowski (84-79 - 163). The Panthers rode Kummerfeld's hot hand and Demeo's consistency to their seventh top-five finish in nine events this year. Demeo now has four top-15 outings this season. With key contributions throughout the lineup, the Brown and Gold were able to garner an 11-1 head-to-head record against Northeast schools in the Goldey-Beacom tournament. "This was an important step for us, our first major district tournament without Mauricio Saavedra," head coach Scott Allen said. "The team knows how proud I am of them and this result." Adelphi will return to action on Sunday, April 6, in the Dowling College Peter King Memorial Tournament at Long Island National Golf Club in Riverhead, New York. |
