Sophomore Diana DiPiano combined for 6-of-8 hitting with two homeruns and seven RBI to lead the Adelphi University softball team to a 14-0, 13-1 conference sweep of NYIT this afternoon. The Panthers improve to 22-8 and 10-2 in the ECC, while the Bears fall to 13-11 and 5-3.
Game One
A double by junior Julie Schaper scored sophomore Kristin Brennan in the first inning to give the Panthers an early lead. Up 2-0 going into the third, the Panthers loaded the bases and scored two runners on a NYIT error and another on a walk that pushed home sophomore Christina O'Hara. Adelphi exploded with eight runs in the fourth, thanks to a two-run homer by senior Alana daSilva and a three-run blast by DiPiano. The Panthers final run came in the fifth as O'Hara scored on a single by sophomore Samantha Johnston.
Freshman Christine Robinson pitched the two-hit shut out, striking out one.
Adelphi had 14 runs on 19 hits with no errors. NYIT had no runs on two hits with one error.
Game Two
Freshman Katie Brophy drove in daSilva in the second inning to put the Panthers ahead. The Bears evened the score, 1-1, in the bottom of the inning. DiPiano belted her second three-run homer of the day in the third inning to put Adelphi up for good. The Panthers would tally 10 runs on eight hits in the third for the victory.
Brophy finished with a 2-of-4 effort with two RBI, while Johnston went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI.
Schaper recorded the win, allowing three hits, one run, one earned, while fanning six.
Adelphi had 13 runs on 16 hits with no errors. NYIT had one run on three hits with two errors.
The Panthers are scheduled to play at Caldwell College tomorrow afternoon beginning at 1:00 p.m.
