Box Score

Brookville, N.Y. - Vanessa Piepszak hit a bases-loaded single through the right side of the infield with two outs in the top of the seventh inning Thursday morning, scoring Stacey Ryan and an opportunistic Autumn Florez on a subsequent error, as fifth-seeded Georgian Court scored five unearned runs in the inning to push past fourth-seeded and 16th-ranked Adelphi, 5-4, in Game 1 of the NCAA Division II Softball Championship's Northeast Regional.

With the victory, Georgian Court (29-22) moves to Game 7 of the regional Friday at 2 p.m., where it will face eighth-seeded UMass Lowell. Adelphi (38-12) will play in Game 5 of the regional Friday at 9 a.m., against top-seeded Le Moyne. The River Hawks upset the Dolphins, 4-1, in game two.

Adelphi took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning, when Diana DiPiano lined a solo homer to left field. The Panthers then used the long ball again in the sixth inning, when a three-run blast to left-center field by Alana daSilva scored Jessica Vogt and Kristin Brennan, and gave her team a 4-0 lead.

GCU sent 10 batters to the plate in the top of the seventh inning, starting when Ashley Wierema led off the frame by reaching second base on an outfield error. Heather Walker then lined a sharp single off AU pitcher Julie Schaper (19-7 record; CG, 3 H, 5 unearned runs, 3 BB, 12 K), before Nicole Fortino walked two batters later to load the bases. Wierema scored on a fielder's choice, before Walker came home on Stacey Ryan's RBI force out to bring the Lions to within a 4-2 score. Autumn Florez then walked to load the bases, before Julie Sito's walk brought home Kristina Iacovino to bring her team within a run. From there, Piepszak (2-for-4) singled through the right side to drive in Ryan; Florez then scored on an outfield throwing error on the same play, to give Georgian Court the 5-4 lead.

Adelphi's Dely Francisco (2-for-2) hit a one-out triple to right field, but Lions pitcher Samantha Sasko (21-9; CG, 6 H, 4 ER, 2 BB, 2 K) induced two infield pop-outs to give Georgian Court its first NCAA victory.
