Brookville, N.Y. - Sophomore Samantha Johnston went 2-for-3 with one run scored and a homerun but it was not enough as the #16 Adelphi University softball team fell to Bryant College, 5-2, in game 10 of the NCAA Northeast Regional Tournament. The Panthers (29-17) end their season at 39-17, while the Bulldogs (29-17) advanced to face Dowling College. The Bulldogs tallied five runs on four homeruns to come from behind to top the Panthers. Sophomore Diana DiPiano singled in the first to drive in Johnston who singled to the shortstop and advanced to second on a sac bunt by sophomore Kristin Brennan. Johnston's solo homerun in the third put Adelphi up, 2-0. Amanda Wilbur tallied the first of her two homeruns in the fourth to put Bryant on board. Jennifer Serrano follwed with a two-run effort to put the Bulldogs up for good. Wilbur's second homerun in the fifth pushed Bryant's lead to 4-2 with Alison Chouinard adding an insurance run in the seventh with a solo homerun down the leftfield line. Senior Sheila Feldman pitched 3.2 innings, allowing four hits, three runs, three earned while walking two and striking out one. Janine Enos gave up six hits in a complete game with two runs, two earned, no walks and two strikeouts. Adelphi, under the direction of first year head coach Joe Burbridge, finish the season with a new DII school record of 39 wins. The Panthers ranked as high as No. 8 in the NFCA Top 25 and finish the season ranked 16th. |
