ADRIAN, Mich. - The Adrian women's lacrosse team won their third straight to open their inaugural season on Wednesday night with a thrilling 18-17 win over Oberlin College in the first home game in program history. It also was the first NCAA varsity women's lacrosse game played in the state of Michigan. Mariana DiGiovanni scored a whopping eight goals and now has 14 on the season. She scored six goals in the first 20-plus minutes of the game and added two more goals in the second half. Ashley Starkey tallied four goals for the Bulldogs. She scored all of her goals in the second half and scored the eventual game-winner with 5:47 left in the contest. Andrea Soloko and Amanda Beger also had two goals each for Adrian. Amanda Faraone picked up her third win in goal making nine saves including four in the second half. Oberlin held a 36-32 advantage in shots but Adrian had one more shot on goal (26-25) than the Yeowomen. Adrian scored the first three goals of the game in a span of 1:15 and never trailed in the contest. Oberlin trailed 18-15 with 2:29 left but scored twice just 17 seconds apart to put the pressure back on the Bulldogs. After leading 10-8 at halftime, Adrian scored the first five goals of the second half to take a 15-8 lead with 22:33 remaining. Oberlin then scored four straight to cut the lead to 15-12 with 19:50 left in the game. |
