EL PASO, TX- Despite a long flight and an early morning start, the Alaska Nanooks rifle team managed to edge University of Texas at El Paso on Sunday, winning the match by a slim 47-point margin, 4625-4578. While head coach Dan Jordan will look for bigger scores from his team as the year goes on, the Blue and Gold beat out UTEP in both events, taking smallbore 2292-2255, and a narrow win in air rifle, 2333-2323.

Junior Patrik Sartz showed his value to the Nanooks, putting up a match-best 582 in smallbore and a team-best 589 in air rifle. Taylor Beard fired a solid 584 in air rifle, while Christofer Olofsson put up a 580: a score which could have been much better if not for an unfortunate zero on his last shot for double-loading the rifle.

The match kicked off a busy week of action for the Nanooks, which will see them compete in three other meets in two different states over the next five days. The Nanooks meet Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas on Wednesday.
