Alaska Looks To Tame Wildcats, Spring Back Into GNAC Race

Jan. 18, 2008

Complete Central Washington Game Notes

• In the 37 previous meetings between Central Washington and Alaska, the Wildcats hold a distinct 11-26 advantage over the Nanooks. Central took a clean sweep over Alaska in the 2006-07 season, including a 74-67 victory in Ellensburg at the two teams' last meeting on Feb. 27, 2007.

• Alaska's last win against the Wildcats came in the team's final game of the 2005-06 season, recording a 90-77 home win over Central. Five Nanooks, including current co-captain Mike Titus, scored in double-figures that evening, paced by 20 from alum Chris Jordan.

• The Wildcats come into tonight's match having dropped a close game to conference top dogs Anchorage on Thursday, falling 78-73 to the Seawolves. The loss drops Central to fourth in the GNAC standings with a 3-2 mark: the Wildcats previously recorded victories over Seattle Pacific, Western Oregon, and Saint Martin's while falling to Northwest Nazarene in Idaho.

• The Nanooks boast one of the conference's top scorers in Kevin Atkins, who currently sits in eleventh place among all GNAC players, averaging 14.2 ppg a contest. A constant double-double threat, Atkins is currently second to only UAA's Carl Arts for the league lead in rebounding as well, grabbing 8.0 boards a contest. • A resurgent Mike Titus seems to have put the illnesses that hampered the early part of his season behind him, scoring 62 points in the Nanooks' three conference contests so far, including a team-high 18 against Western Washington on Thursday. The senior co-captain now has 656 total points for his four-year Alaska career, moving him into the school's all-time top 50 scorers. He currently sits in 45th place, tying Bob Clarke, who also scored 656 points for the Nanooks between 1973-74.

• Redshirt freshman Keven Campbell has slotted nicely into the point guard role for the Nanooks. Campbell currently leads the team in assists, having dished out five in four of his last five games. Campbell also had a career-high 17 points in Alaska's win over Western Oregon on Jan. 5, besting his previous mark of 16 points which he had set just two days earlier against Saint Martin's. The Stockton, California native has scored in double-digits in three of the Nanooks' last four games.

Colin Matteson had one of his best games of the season against rival Alaska Anchorage on Jan 12. The junior sharpshooter led the Nanooks with 19 points, including hitting three of his six three-pointers, helping the Nanooks shoot over 44 percent from behind the arc on the night.
