Late Saints Run Frustrates Nanooks Again, 65-59

Feb. 14, 2008

Box Score

LACEY, WA- Saint Martin's seems to have frustrating the Nanook women down to a science. After handing Alaska a tough 63-61 loss at the Patty Center on Jan. 19, the Saints repeated the feat in Lacey, Wash. on Thursday, as the Blue and Gold fell, 65-59.

Trailing by as many as 11 in the second half, Alaska would trim Saint Martin's advantage all the way down to just two points, following a Sheena Brown lay-up with just 58 seconds remaining.

From there, however, it was all Saints. Kassie Ludeman grabbed a huge offensive rebound after a Sade Smith miss, forcing the Nanooks to send her to the free throw line. Ludeman and Michelle Short would both add two late steal to keep Alaska off the scoreboard as the home side used a late 9-3 run to take the game from the Nanooks.

Sheena Brown contributed a game-high 23 points, hitting five three-pointers to lead Alaska in scoring for the 11th time this season. The Fairbanks native also had four steals in the game, as the Nanooks forced 23 turnovers out of the Saints. Seniors Joscelyn Shumate and Kari Reabold added 13 and 12 points, respectively.

Saint Martin's was led by 15 points from Jamey Gelhar, but the Saints won the game on their depth, as every player who took the floor for the home side registered at least one point. Ultimately, the Saints bench would outscore the Nanooks bench by a 30-5 margin.

Alaska will look to regain some momentum and confidence as they head to Western Oregon for a Saturday meeting with the Wolves. Tip-off in Monmouth is set for 6:00 p.m. Alaska time.
