Vaden Scores 41 In UAB Win Over UTEP
Feb. 27, 2008 EL PASO, Texas --Robert Vaden scored 41 points, including 27 off 3-pointers, to lead UAB to an 88-81 victory over Texas-El Paso on Wednesday night. Vaden broke the single-game school record for threes made (9) and points on the road in the win. He also tied former Blazer great Andy Kennedy's record for points scored in game with the 41 points. Additionally, Vaden's nine three-pointers on the night gives him 122 made treys on the season. He ties the single-season school record for threes made in the season, set by Kennedy during the 1988-89 campaign. Vaden's performance was one of the more special performances ever witnessed in a UAB uniform. The Indianapolis, Ind. native shot 12-of-21 from the field and 9-of-14 from 3-point range for UAB (20-8, 10-3 Conference USA). In the second half alone, Vaden connected on 8-of-12 shots from the floor and 5-0f-6 from deep, helping UAB recover from an eight-point deficit with just over eight minutes remaining. He also hit eight of his 10 free throw attempts in the contest. Aaron Johnson scored a career-high 13 points for UAB. He also had four assists and only one turnover in the contest. Stefon Jackson scored 23 points and Randy Culpepper added 15 for UTEP (16-10, 7-6). Marvin Kilgore scored 13 for the Miners. UTEP led by eight points, 64-56, with 8:19 left before UAB rallied. Back-to-back 3-pointers by Lawrence Kinnard and Vaden tied the score at 70-70. After Jackson hit a jumper for UTEP, Vaden countered with eight straight points on two 3-pointers and two free throws for a 78-72 lead. UTEP could get no closer than two points the rest of the way. The win game UAB its 20th victory overall, marking the 19th time in the 29-year history of the men's basketball program that it reached the 20-win plateau.
UAB will hope to continue its three-game win streak, when the Blazers take on the Tulane Green Wave on Saturday, March 1, at 7 p.m. |
