UAB Practices In Shoulder Pads For First Time Wednesday

Aug. 6, 2008

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB football team took to the practice fields for the third time Wednesday afternoon in preparation for the upcoming season. The practice session, which lasted close to three hours, marked the first time that the team suited up in shoulder pads.

UAB head coach Neil Callaway was looking for improvement as the team got physical in the near triple digit temperatures

"I was hoping we would have a little faster tempo and pace with the first day of shoulder pads," said Callaway. "The defense got the better of it the first part of practice. I did think at the end, with 11-on-11 drills, everybody picked up a little bit and competed pretty good."

Both veterans and newcomers alike received praise from Callaway as the team wrapped up its third practice.

"Justin Brooks has really looked good," said Callaway. "He's having a good camp and he is finishing his runs. He's looking really good."

On the defensive side, freshman safety Chase Daniel was able to garner some recognition.

"Chase competed well in some things," said Callaway. "Obviously, we'd like for him to continue to come on but we will wait and see."

The team will continue to practice on Thursday in shoulder pads, with first day of full pads scheduled for Friday.

UAB faces off against Conference USA foe Tulsa at home on Aug. 30. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. CT at Legion Field.
