UAB Men's Tennis Team Defeats Troy, 5-2

TROY, Ala. ----- The UAB men's tennis team captured the doubles point, then took wins at four of six singles matches en route to a 5-2 victory Sunday over Troy. The win was the Blazers' 10th in the past 11 matches. The 66th-ranked Blazers (11-2) won at No. 2 and 3 doubles to take the doubles point and then won straight-set matches at No. 2, 3 and 6 singles. UAB also won a three-setter at No. 5 singles as Brian Ly defeated the Trojans' Edwin van Aerts, 3-6, 6-0, 6-3. UAB won easily at No. 2 and 3 doubles as Brian Ly and Hans Spangenberg teamed to down Diego Martinez and Andrey Morozova, 8-1, at No. 2, then Dan Cornei and Alex Emery defeated Guilherde Sahadi and Benjamin Chomette at the No. 3 spot, 8-5. Troy was an 8-5 winner at No. 1 doubles as Bastian Maucher and Mario Silva beat the Blazer duo of Tyrone Ewels and Slawomir Szeremeta, 8-5. Cornei won at No. 2 singles, taking a 6-4, 6-4 decision over Silva. At No. 3 singles, Spangenberg cruised past Sahadi, 6-0, 6-1, while Emery claimed a 6-3, 7-5 victory at No.6 singles over Troy's Martinez. The Trojans posted their two wins at No. 1 and 4 singles. Chomette defeated UAB's Szeremeta at the No. 1 spot, 6-2, 6-3, with Maucher taking a 6-4, 6-3 win over Ewels at the No. 4 singles position. The Blazers will play one more regular season match (Tuesday at home vs. Mercer) before traveling to Dallas, Texas next weekend for the Conference USA Championships. No. 66 UAB 5, Troy 2
