Women's Soccer Set To Host Mexico U20 National Team Thursday

April 9, 2008

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB women's soccer team will conclude its spring season with a scrimmage against the Mexico Under-20 National Team Thursday at West Campus Field. The two squads are slated to kick off at 7:00 p.m. at West Campus Field.

Mexico is making a three-game tour in Alabama and Georgia in preparation for the Under-20 Women's World Cup in Chile this November. UAB is the first stop on the tour, followed by games at Kennesaw State and the University of Georgia.

"We are excited to be hosted by UAB," said Mexico National Team Coordinator Gerardo Lepe. "We know this is one of the up and coming national programs in the United States. This will be our third time in Birmingham and we are always warmly received."

The Blazers will use Thursday's scrimmage as their final test of the spring season. UAB head coach Paul Harbin has been impressed with his squad's progress this spring and is looking forward to seeing his team against Mexico's style of play.

"Mexico is a very fit and hard-working team," said Harbin. "They play with a high intensity level and are technically sound. Mexico has a creative way of attacking and plays with a lot of passion and flare.

"I think our team has made progress with our speed of play this spring and it will be interesting to see how far we've come against an international-caliber team."

Tickets be purchased by visiting the UAB ticket office at Bartow Arena or by calling (205) 975-UAB1. Tickets will also be available at the gate the day of the game.

Admission to the event is $12 for adults, $8 for youth under 18 and fans under five years of age will be admitted free. Groups of 15 or more can purchase tickets for $8 each. Also, UAB students will be admitted free by showing their UAB identification card.
