Aug. 30, 2007
LQ Cup Game Notes BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB women's soccer team will kick off its 2007 season this weekend when it participates in the LQ Cup tournament on the campus of Mercer University in Macon, Ga. The Blazers will take on Mercer on Friday at 7 p.m. ET, followed by a match versus Georgia State on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. ET. Led by 12th-year head coach Paul Harbin, UAB enters the '07 campaign with 10 returning letterwinners, including six starters, from the 2006 season where the Blazers finished 8-12-1 and won the Conference USA tournament championship. UAB also welcomes nine newcomers to the squad for the upcoming year. The Blazers' first test of the season will be Harbin's alma mater, the Mercer Bears, on Friday evening. Mercer, a member of the Atlantic Sun conference, finished the 2006 season at 5-11-2 overall and tied for third place in the league at 5-3-1. The Bears are coached by fourth-year head coach Grant Serafy, who has an 18-34-3 mark at the helm of the program. UAB and Mercer tangled on the field last season, with the Blazers earning the 1-0 victory on a goal by Jill Porto. Overall, UAB leads the series, 2-0. Following a day off on Saturday, UAB will face Georgia State on Sunday afternoon for the first time in program history. Led by head coach Domenic Martelli, the Panthers concluded the '06 season with a 5-12-3 record, including a 2-8-1 mark in Colonial Athletic Association games.
"We're excited to get on the road and start playing," said Harbin. "We've made positive progress in all of our preseason matches and seem to be coming together as a team on the field. "I believe we're as athletic as we've ever been and have the ability to attack from almost every position. Defensively, our organization is fairly solid for this early in the year. Our goal is to do everything possible to stay focused for the entire 90 minutes against quality opponents." |
