Women's Soccer Hits The Road To Take On Rice, Houston

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB women's soccer team will be looking for its first Conference USA victory of the season when it plays at Rice and Houston on Friday and Sunday, respectively. The Blazers will try to rebound from their 2-1 overtime loss at Memphis last Friday in their conference opener.

Sophomore Danya Barsalona is leading the Blazers with four goals on 13 shots and has a team-best .308 shot percentage. Senior Sally Palmer and freshman Justine Hartigan have added two goals each, while junior Nadine Liverpool has chipped in one score this season.

UAB (4-5-1, 0-1-0 C-USA) will play Rice on Friday at 7:00 p.m. at the Rice Track and Soccer Stadium. The all-time series between the Blazers and the Owls is tied at one-all. UAB won the last meeting between the two schools, 3-1, on Oct. 22, 2006 in Birmingham.

Rice is sporting an overall record of 7-3-1, including a 1-0-0 league mark after its 2-0 win over cross-town foe Houston last Friday.

The Owls, who are led by seventh-year head coach Chris Huston, are being paced by offensively by Kate Edwards with eight goals this season. She is followed by Clory Martin with four goals and Erin Scott with three.

The Blazers will tangle with Houston on Sunday, with kick off scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Robertson Stadium. UAB leads the all-time series with the Cougars, 5-3, but Houston was victorious in the last meeting, 1-0, on Oct. 20, 2006 in Birmingham.

Led by first-year head coach Susan Bush, the Cougars are 4-5-1 on the year and 0-1-0 in Conference USA. Islara Rodriquez is Houston's top scorer with three goals, while Lauri Byrne has two and three other players have one each.

 

 

This weekend will mark UAB's seventh and eighth consecutive games on the road. The Blazers will return home to play at West Campus Field for the first time in over a month on Oct. 19 when they host SMU at 7:00 p.m.
