Softball Opens Conference USA Slate at UTEP

EL PASO, Texas ---- The UAB softball team opens its 2008 Conference USA schedule this weekend as it will take on UTEP in a three-game series beginning Saturday.

The Blazers (13-11) come into the matchup with the Miners (14-6) holding an all-time series record of 5-1. UAB swept UTEP in Birmingham last season. The only loss in the all-time series was came in 2006 in El Paso.

UAB is paced by Holly Krzan and the plate. The senior shortstop is hitting .388 and leads the Blazers in several offensive categories, which include runs (21), hits (26), doubles (8), home runs (3) and RBI (15). She also hit the Blazers' first triple of the season against Alabama.

In the circle for the Blazers will be the one-two punch of Jennifer Nelson and Kayla Harris. Nelson (7-8) is leading the league in strikeouts with 123 in her 102 innings pitched. The Confernce USA Pitcher of the Week recently passed the 700-career mark for Ks and became the second UAB pitcher to strike out 100 or more batters in four consecutive seasons last weekend at the Magic City Classic.

Harris (6-3) has an ERA of 3.02 headed into the contest with the Miners. The righty pitched three innings against Alabama Thursday night allowing five runs.

 

 

Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. MST. Sunday's single game begins at Noon.
