Lady Hornets Snatch Vital SWAC Win from Texas Southern

March 1, 2008

Final Stats

Houston, Texas - The Alabama State Lady Hornets, facing the possibility of falling out of contention for the SWAC tournament, played one of their best games of the season a week ago when they beat Southern. ASU kept their momentum alive Saturday night as they topped Texas Southern 55-48 in Houston.

The victory gave ASU its first back-to-back conference wins this season, and leaves the Lady Hornets at 6-9, tied with TSU in 7th place and a ½ game behind Mississippi Valley State and Arkansas-Pine Bluff in 5th.

A back-and-forth first half - filled with seven early ties - saw the Lady Tigers surge ahead on a 15-5 run as ASU missed 11 of 12 shots. At halftime, TSU held a 31-23 advantage.

That's when the game changed entirely. With their season on the line, the Lady Hornets played their best 20 minutes of defense this year.

ASU held Texas Southern to 12% from the floor, on a paltry 3 of 26 shooting. On the other end, Erica Lumpkin heated up for the Lady Hornets, stroking three three-pointers as part of her 11 point second half.

After pulling to a 42-40 deficit with just over eight minutes to play, ASU closed the game on a 15-6 run to lock up the win.

Lumpkin finished with 14 points, and LaShundreya Townsend added 10 for ASU.

The Lady Hornets (10-16, 6-9 SWAC) take on conference-leading Prairie View Monday night before returning home to end the season with Grambling State and Jackson State on Thursday and Saturday.
