Carr was named to the first team while Mercer was named second team

WASHINGTON - After helping the American University men's basketball team to its third Patriot League Regular Season Championship on Saturday, juniors Garrison Carr and Derrick Mercer have been named to the All-Patriot League Teams, conference officials announced Monday. Carr was named First Team All-PL after making a conference record 117 three-point baskets during the season and Mercer was named to the second team after averaging 12.9 points per game.

Carr earned first team honors after leading the Eagles offense with 18.1 points per game and ranking third in the League. Carr's point production has come primarily from behind the arc where he has made a PL record 117 three-point field goals this season. Carr currently ranks fifth in the country with 4.1 three pointers per game and 21st in the country with a three-point field-goal percentage of 44.6. Carr also ranks 15th in the country with an 88.1 free-throw percentage and 59th in scoring average. Carr has started 28 of 29 games for the Eagles, averaging 35.4 minutes per game, and has set new career-highs in every statistical category including points per game, field goals (165), three-point field goals, free throws (79), rebounds (97) and assists (47). Carr was named the PL Anaconda Player of the Week three times this season including his first career honor on Jan. 14 and back-to-back honors Feb. 11 and Feb. 18.

Mercer has been named Second Team All-PL after a season in which he has dished out 4.14 assists per game and scored 12.9 points per game. Mercer ranks third in the conference in assists and 12th in scoring, and is also ranked in the PL's top-10 in field goal percentage (.439, 7th), three-point percentage (.437, 4th) and assist to turnover ratio (1.40, 4th). Mercer has started 28 of 29 games for the Eagles, averaging a team leading 37.6 minutes per game, and has set new career-highs in points per game, field goals (124), three-point field goals (31), free throws (96) and rebounds (93). Mercer was named the PL Anaconda Player of the Week once this season, taking the first award of the year on Nov. 12.
 

 

Carr's selection to the All-PL First Team marks the first major conference award of his career. Mercer's selection to the All-PL Second Team is his first to an All-PL Team but is his second major award from the conference. He was previously named the 2005-06 PL Rookie of the Year.

By claiming the PL Regular Season Championship on Saturday, the Eagles also own the No. 1 seed in the PL Tournament and home-court advantage throughout. The PL Tournament will begin this Wednesday, March 5, as AU hosts eighth seeded Holy Cross in the quarterfinal round at Bender Arena.
