WASHINGTON - The American University wrestling team will be back in action this Saturday and Sunday, March 8-9, when they travel to Lancaster, Pa., for the 104th Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association Tournament held this year on the campus of Franklin & Marshall College. Four place winners from last year's sixth place team return for AU led by No. 1 197 lbs. Josh Glenn and No. 6 165 lbs. Mike Cannon.
At this year's EIWA Tournament AU will look to improve on its program best sixth-place finish from a year ago when it totaled 71 points over the weekend and put six wrestlers on the podium. Glenn won American's only championship last year at 197 lbs. while Cannon placed second at his first conference championship. Other place winners included 141-pounder Kyle Borshoff who took fourth, 149-pounder Damian Swietlik and 174-pound Rudy Rueda who both placed fifth and 125-pounder Jasen Borshoff who placed sixth. The Eagles also took home their first EIWA Sportsmanship Award from last year's tournament.
Glenn is a two-time EIWA Champion and three-time place winner. Last year he won the title at 197 lbs. while in 2006 he won it all at 184 lbs. As a freshman, Glenn placed second at 184 lbs. Glenn, the top ranked wrestler in his weight class, has earned the No. 1 seed at 197 lbs. in this year's tournament after going 12-0 a year removed from winning AU's first NCAA National Championship.
Cannon has become one of the top 165-pounders in the country and this weekend is looking to capture his first EIWA Championship. Last year Cannon placed second, losing only to Steve Anceravage of Cornell in the finals, 6-9. Entering this year's tournament Cannon is ranked sixth in the country with an overall record of 22-2 and is sure to earn either a one or two seed.
K. Borshoff has flirted with the national rankings this season and enters the weekend with a 22-6 overall record at 141 lbs. Borshoff placed fourth at last year's tournament and this year will look to capture his first conference championship. Borshoff should receive one of the top seeds in the tournament and with his 6-0 mark against EIWA opponents this year he will certainly be one wrestler to keep an eye on.
J. Borshoff took sixth at last year's championships and will be looking to improve on that this year. Borshoff is 14-13 this season and missed four of the team's last five dual meets. Be on the look out for Borshoff this weekend as he attempts to climb into the conference's top-three.
This year's tournament will be broadcast live over the internet for fans unable to make the trip to Lancaster. B2 Network and F&M have teamed up to provide full coverage of all four sessions of the tournament with a four-camera shoot and graphics package. The Eagles finished their dual meet scheduled Feb. 21 with a 16-26 loss at Binghamton, falling to 3-15 overall and 1-5 in the EIWA. AU's lack of depth contributed to its struggles as a dual team but in tournament's American faired much better. The Eagles opened their year at the Northeast Duals in Philadelphia on Nov. 18 where Cannon repeated as champion and the team placed sixth overall. At the 45th Midlands Championships AU placed 13th overall after Glenn captured the program's first-ever Midlands Championship.
