No. 21 Men's Tennis Blanks Wildcats 7-0

April 19, 2008

The No. 21 Arizona State men's tennis team capped the regular season with a 7-0 sweep over rival Arizona at the Whiteman Tennis Center. This is their second win over the Wildcats this season. The Sun Devils finished the dual season 15-4 and finished 3-4 in the Pac-10.

The Sun Devils earned the doubles point by taking two of the three matches. The No. 43 team of Matt Brooklyn and T.J. Bellama defeated Jay Goldman and Claudio Christen 8-5. The duo of Andres Arango and Harry Skinner also earned an 8-5 victory over Bruno Alcala and Ravid Hazi. The No. 3 position match between Wes Miller and John Nanosky and Andres Carrasco and Peter Zimmer was stopped at 6-6.

In singles, No. 82 Brooklyn breezed past Christen in his first set 6-1 and finished off his opponent 7-5 in the second. In the No. 2 slot, No. 59 Arango earned a singles point for the Sun Devils after Carrasco had to end the match early in the first set due to injury.

Senior Juan Carlos Rebaza made sure to make his last match at the Whiteman Tennis Center a memorable one. After struggling in his first set, Rebaza stormed back to take down Alcala 1-6, 7-6 (6) 11-9. Rebaza capped his senior season going 18-13 in singles.

At the bottom of the lineup, Skinner defeated Wildcat Pat Metham 6-4, 7-5 (1). Miller finished his match with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Zimmer. Bellama also capped the dual season with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Hazi.

The Sun Devils head to the Pac-10 Championships in Ojai, Calif., next week. The championships begin April 24 and conclude the 27th.
