Lawlor Ties Career Best with Four Goals to Lift Water Polo to 12-5 Win

TEMPE, Ariz. - Katy Lawlor scored four goals, including a pair to open the game, and goalie Caylinn Wallace stopped 17 shots as the No. 7 Arizona State University water polo team ran its current winning streak to eight in a row with its 12-5 defeat of visiting No. 15 CS Northridge Saturday afternoon at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center in Tempe. The Sun Devils improved to 19-9 overall and 6-4 in the MPSF while the Matadors slipped to 10-12 overall with a 1-9 record in the league. ASU came out hot to open the first quarter of play as Lawlor scored a pair to stake the hosts to a 2-0 lead before Addison McGrath scored to make it 3-0. After CSUN tallied its first goal, Kelly Phelps scored with 14 seconds remaining to push the host's advantage to 4-1. The Matadors cut the lead to two again before Lawlor completed the hat trick with a goal at 4:32 in the second. CSUN scored once more before Lauren Hayes found the back of the cage with 3:17 remaining. Phelps closed the quarter with her second goal to push the Sun Devils to a 7-3 halftime lead. The Matadors scored in the third quarter on a penalty shot before the Sun Devils responded with a goal from Amanda Stepp to send the game to the final stanza with the hosts on top, 9-4. In the final quarter, CSUN cut the lead to 9-5 before the Sun Devils scored three unanswered to close the game with a 12-5 win. In the fourth quarter, Bonnie Miles, who moved into ninth on the career assists list (35) with two helpers on the day, scored once before McGrath netted two more scores.
