TEMPE, Ariz. - Caylinn Wallace, a senior member of the Arizona State University water polo team, has been named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) Mikasa Co-Player of the Week, the league announced this week. The senior goalie, who has received the league award for the second time in three weeks, was instrumental in helping ASU to four wins over the weekend and the team's second, six-game winning streak of the season.
For the weekend, Wallace averaged 11.25 saves per game and stopped 45 shots overall as the Sun Devils downed league foe Pacific (17-9), CS San Bernardino (11-3), Cal Baptist (13-4) and No. 19 UC San Diego (8-4). Wallace opened the weekend with nine saves against the Tigers before stopping 17 in the win over the Coyotes of CSUSB. In the game with the Lancers, Wallace stopped eight shots before notching nine more against the Tritons.
Wallace had a pair of historical saves in the final two games of the weekend as well. Against CBU, her eighth and final save was the 1,000th of her career while her fourth stop against UCSD gave her 263 saves on the season, establishing a single-season record (she held the previous mark of 262).
This is Wallace's second award of the season as she shared the honor with UCLA's Courtney Mathewson on March 17 before sharing this week's honor with USC's Veronika Bartunkova. For her career, Wallace has been named the player of the week four times. She was first honored during the 2005 season (April 3) when she recorded a school-record 22 saves in ASU's 8-7 overtime upset of No. 8 UC Santa Barbara. Her second honor came in 2006 (April 23) when her seven saves and four steals led the Sun Devils to a 5-4 defeat of No. 8 San Diego State.
The Sun Devils will hit the road this weekend for one MPSF game as they are set to face No. 18 UC Santa Barbara at noon on Saturday in Santa Barbara, Calif.
