Water Polo's McGrath Selected MPSF Mikasa Co-Player of the Week

April 21, 2008

TEMPE, Ariz. - Addison McGrath, a junior on the Arizona State University water polo team, has been selected as the MPSF Mikasa Co-Player of the Week following a three-goal performance Saturday that led the No. 6 Sun Devils to a 10-7 upset of No. 4 San Diego State and their highest finish in MPSF play. The Sun Devil all-around player, who shares this week's award with CS Northridge goalie Jullian Stapf, was tabbed for the honor for the first time this year and the second time in her career.

McGrath netted a trio of goals, all in the second half of play, to keep the Sun Devils on top of the visiting Aztecs and defeat their third Top 4 team this year. With her goals, McGrath has scored 73 on the season for a 2.52 goals per game average, both of which lead the MPSF and rank among the Top 10 nationally.

The program's all-time and single-season goal scoring leading, McGrath has tallied 73 goals (No. 1) and added 37 assists (No. 2) this year for the most points scored in a season in program history (110). For her career, she has scored 166 goals and added the second-most assists (80) while holding the top spot for points with 246.

The honor for McGrath is the second of her career after first earning the award on April 11, 2006, when the freshman scored three goals to lead ASU to a 5-3 upset of No. 8 San Jose State on the road. McGrath's honor also stands as the third for the program this season as goalie Caylinn Wallace was selected for the award twice (March 17 and March 31).

ASU, which finished the season tied with Hawai'i for fifth in the MPSF, will open play at the MPSF Championships in San Diego, Calif., on Thursday as the sixth seed in the annual event. The Sun Devils will face 11th-seeded CS Northridge at 12:40 p.m. with the winner taking on third-seeded USC on Friday at 2:30 p.m.
