BUFFALO, N.Y. - After the second day of competition, the Richmond women and Massachusetts men continue to lead the Atlantic 10 Men's & Women's Swimming and Diving Championships at the Flickinger Center.
On the men's leader board, the Minutemen sit on top with a total of 280 points, 76 ahead of second place St. Bonaventure. The Bonnies have 204 points, followed by Duquesne (166), Xavier (144), La Salle (141), Fordham (136), Rhode Island (135), Saint Louis (91), and George Washington (85).
In the evening's first event, Richmond senior Jessica Witt won gold in the women's 500-yard freestyle for the fourth consecutive year, touching for a time of 4:54.75. For the men, Duquesne's Edward LeBlanc swam to a first-place finish with a time of 4:29.73.
The Spiders also earned gold in the women's 200-yard IM, as for the third straight year junior Lauren Beaudreau finished on top in the event (2:02.05). Following suit, George Washington junior David Zenk posted a gold finish on the men's side with a time of 1:50.50 to win the event for a third year in a row.
Richmond sits atop the women's standings with a score of 247. Xavier sits in second place with 184 points, 63 behind the Spiders. Duquesne is in third place (172), followed by Massachusetts in fourth (156), Fordham in fifth (155), St. Bonaventure in sixth (119), Rhode Island in seventh (109), La Salle in eighth (101), George Washington in ninth (96) and Saint Louis in tenth (82).
Karen Upperco established a new conference record during women's one-meter diving. The Massachusetts junior posted a score of 520.60, beating the old mark by more than 25 points. The Minutewomen also took second and third place behind freshman Anne Fogerty (490.85) and junior Sarah Horstmann (464.35), respectively.
Massachusetts sophomore Juan Moliere garnered first place in the men's 50-yard freestyle, touching for a time of 20.77. Richmond won the event on the women's side, as sophomore Katie Sieben took home the gold (23.56).
Duquesne captured the gold in both the men's and women's 200-yard
freestyle relay.

The Duquesne women's team of seniors Melissa Johnson and Lauren Stephens teamed with juniors Katrina Streiner and Christina Sherrard for a winning time of 1:34.32. Freshmen Jim O'Hara, Rich Ryan and LeBlanc combined with sophomore Brendan Schilling to earn first on the men's side, as the Dukes won the event for the third year in a row.
The third day begins at 10:30 a.m. with morning preliminaries. Finals will commence at 6:30 p.m. The Flickinger Center will open its doors at 9:15 a.m. Coverage and live streaming video of the day's events is located on www.atlantic10.org.
