Auburn's Gibbes and Rifkin Selected for Individual Competition in the 2008 Varsity Equestrian National Championships
April 1, 2008
AUBURN -- Auburn equestrian is ranked fifth in Hunt Seat and seventh in Western for the 2008 Varsity Equestrian National Championships April 17-19 in Waco, Texas. Senior Julie Gibbes was selected third in Western Reining, while sophomore Rebecca Rifkin was selected fourth in Hunt Seat Equitation on the Flat. "I'm fine with the rankings," said Auburn head coach Greg Williams. "We could have performed better at times, and we'll need to at Nationals." Gibbes has been one of the most consistent and productive leaders of Auburn's equestrian team. She came to Auburn having never competed in Western Reining, and now she is one of the top performers in the country. "No one deserves this honor more than Julie," said Williams. "She has had two phenomenal years here and has done everything we've asked of her and more." Rifkin has earned MVP honors in Hunt Seat Equitation on the Flat this season in meets against Baylor, Oklahoma State, and Stephen F. Austin. "Rebecca is very reserve, but she has that competitive intensity that drives her," said Williams. "Nothing rattles her, and she has been consistent all year. Both girls are happy with their accomplishments, but they want to see this team do well more than themselves."
