NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Babson College track and field teams enjoyed another banner day at the Coast Guard Spring Invitational on Saturday, as both squads placed 10th overall while combining for five New England qualifiers, two school records, and five personal bests. The men's team featured two spectacular performances from senior captain Dan Cowan (Toms River, N.J.) and junior Kirill Kustov (Gaithersburg, Md.) in the 110 meter hurdles. Both qualified for the NCAA New England Division III Championships in the event, with Cowan placing second with a time of 15.92 and Kustov following in third with a mark of 16.28. Junior Greg Keshian (North Andover, Mass.) also excelled for the men's team, recording a pair of personal bests with times of 2:04.58 in the 800 meters and 4:17.83 in the 1500. Junior Kevin Butera (Walpole, Mass.) added a seventh-place performance in his season debut in the triple jump with a finish of 39 feet, 10 inches, and sophomore Charlie Brown (Bronx, N.Y.) placed 15th in his first-ever showing in the shot put with a throw of 34 feet, five inches. On the women's side, first-year Larina Kleynerman (Sudbury, Mass.) paced Babson with two brilliant performances. She finished sixth overall and qualified for the New England Division III Championships in the 100 meter dash, and then placed eighth, qualified for New Englands, and set a new school record with a time of 27.34 in the 200. Kleynerman also competed in the long jump, where she placed eighth with a leap of 15 feet, 3 1/4 inches.
Sophomore Katie Trant (Westfield, Mass.) also had a stellar day for the ladies, as she finished second and qualified for the New England Championships when she cleared 4 feet, 11 inches in the high jump. Trant also reached the finals of the triple jump, where she placed ninth with an effort of 29 feet, 6 1/2 inches. Other highlights for the women included a record-setting performance by the 4x400 team of Trant, first-year Nicole Crowley (Canton, Mass.), sophomore Lauren Blackburn (York, Maine), and senior captain Claudia Schulz (Westonk Fla.), which placed sixth and set a new program mark with a time of 4:29.09. Schulz also added two more stellar efforts in the middle distance events, placing eighth in the 1500 meters with a 5:07.09 and taking ninth with a PR of 2:29.60 in the 800, and Blackburn enjoyed an outstanding performance in the 100 hurdles, placing fourth overall in 16.63 seconds. |
