Ahern's Seven RBIs Help Baseball Steamroll Johnson & Wales, 18-4

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Sophomore Dave Ahern (Bedford, Mass.) recorded four hits and a career-high seven RBIs as the Babson baseball team posted a convincing 18-4 victory over host Johnson & Wales in a non-conference contest at Pierce Field on Thursday afternoon. With the win, the Beavers improved to 12-7 on the year.

Babson took an early 1-0 lead when on RBI single by Ahern in the top of the first. Johnson & Wales responded in the bottom of the second with an RBI single by sophomore Waldis Garcia (Lowell, Mass.), but Babson regained the lead in the top of the third on a sacrifice fly by Ahern. Once again the Wildcats responded in the bottom of the third when a two-run double by junior Jonathan Melendez (Providence, R.I.) gave the team a 3-2 lead, but Babson moved back in front in the top of the fourth after an RBI single by senior Matt Delaney (Newton, Mass.) and an RBI groundout by Ahern.

The visiting Beavers broke the game open with five runs in the top of the fifth, including a two-run single by Ahern, putting the team ahead 9-3. Babson added nine more in the seventh inning, highlighted by a two-run double by senior Robbie Leer (Edina, Minn.) and a two-run single by sophomore Peter O'Toole (Salem, Mass.), en route to the 18-4 win.

Ahern went 4-for-5 with seven RBI in the win for Babson, while Delaney and senior Steve Tahmoush (Arlington, Mass.) each added four hits and four runs scored. Senior Brad Jackson (Setauket, N.Y.) was 2-for-3 with a solo home run in the setback for Johnson & Wales.

 

 

Junior Pete Bizinkauskas (Duxbury, Mass.) picked up the win on the mound for the Beavers, allowing three runs on four hits in seven innings of work.
