Box Score

BABSON PARK, Mass. - Senior co-captain Matt Delaney (Newton, Mass.), sophomore Dave Ahern (Bedford, Mass.), and senior Robbie Leer (Edina, Minn.) all homered to help the Babson College baseball team surge past visiting Fitchburg State College, 11-3, in non-conference action at Govoni Field on Thursday afternoon. The Beavers, ranked seventh in New England by the NCAA, improved to 16-8 overall, while the Falcons dropped to 6-12.

Leading Babson's 16-hit attack were Ahern, who finished 3-for-3 with three runs and two RBIs, and senior Steve Tahmoush (Arlington, Mass.), who went 3-for-4 with three runs scored. Delaney also had multiple hits for the Beavers, going 2-fo-6 with a run and three driven in. Senior Jon Igoe (Lexington, Mass.) went six strong innings on the mound for the hosts, giving up three runs on eight hits to remain unbeaten on the year at 3-0. First-year Stephen Connolly (Quincy, Mass.) added two hitless innings of relief, and junior Chris Legrow (North Andover, Mass.) finished up with a scoreless ninth.

Fitchburg State received two hits apiece from junior Andrew Sauer (Willington, Conn.), sophomore A.J. Balderelli (Holland, Mass.), and first-year Ricky Graham (Walpole, Mass.), with Sauer, Balderelli, and senior tri-captain Jim Abreau (Mansfield, Mass.) each driving in runs. Sophomore Alex Xarras (Lunenburg, Mass.) went seven innings and took the loss for the Falcons, evening his record at 1-1 on the year.

Babson got on the board quickly, as Tahmoush led off the bottom of the first with a single and Delaney followed with a homer to right - his third of the season. The Beavers would add another run later in the inning, as Ahern scored on sophomore Jake Bartlett's (Weymouth, Mass.) sacrifice fly to right to give the Beavers a 3-0 lead.

Fitchburg State got one run back in the top of the third, when Abreau plated Sauer with a sac fly to center. However, Babson answered with a run in the bottom of the inning, as Leer belted his second home run of the spring well over the wall in right.

Sauer drove in Fitchburg's second run with a RBI-groundout in the fourth, but the Beavers once again responded in the bottom half of the frame when Ahern hit a towering two-run homer to center - the first of his college career - to make it a 6-2 ballgame. The Falcons cut their deficit to three with another run in the top of the fifth, but Babson would plate five runs in its next three at-bats to finish off the 11-3 victory.
