Men's Tennis Falls To Springfield, 5-4

BABSON PARK, Mass. - Senior Joe Lisi outdueled Babson's Ben Edick in a close match at No. 2 singles, allowing the Springfield College men's tennis team to defeat the Beavers, 5-4, in a key New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference match this afternoon at Springfield's Appleton Courts.

The win upped Springfield's record to 7-5 overall, and 4-1 in the NEWMAC. Babson fell to 9-10 overall, and 3-2 in the NEWMAC. As the second seed, Springfield now receives a first-round bye in next week's NEWMAC postseason tourney. Babson will be the third seed and host sixth-seeded Clark in a quarterfinal match next Thursdayat 3:30 p.m. The winner will move on to play Springfield in the semifinals at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, Conn. next Saturday.

Springfield took a 2-1 lead after doubles play, winning at No. 2 and No. 3 by slim margins. The Pride then eventually took a 4-3 lead, winning at No. 3 and No. 4 singles. Senior Rahul Bala (Enfield, Conn.) defeated his opponent, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 3 and sophomore Trevor Romanzi (Bayshore, N.Y.) won his match at No. 4, 6-4, 6-1.

Babson refused to go quietly, however, as sophomore Edwin Lee (Mukilteo, Wash.) rallied from a set down to defeat Pride sophomore Tim Tunis (Sudbury, Mass.), 2-6, 7-5, 6-1, at number six. Sophomore Alex Kamergorodsky (Millis, Mass.) and first-year Austin Conti (Murray Hill, N.J.) also added singles victories for the Beavers, while Kamergorodsky also teamed with classmate Brian Lafayette (Burlington, Vt.) on a 9-8 (5) win at number one doubles.

 

 

With the match tied at 4-4, Lisi edged Edick in the first set, 7-6, and then managed to win the second, 6-4, to clinch the overall victory.
