BABSON PARK, Mass. - The New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) recently announced its 2008 Women's Lacrosse postseason honors, and league Champion Babson College led all teams with eight honorees - including five First Team selections, the conference Athlete of the Year, and the league Rookie of the Year. Heading up Babson's long list of award winners was senior tri-captain Anita Martignetti (Winchester, Mass.), who earned her second straight NEWMAC Athlete of the Year selection as well as a spot on the All-Conference First team. The veteran attack totaled 49 goals and 21 assists for a team-high 70 points this spring while also adding 41 groundballs, 43 draw controls, and 28 caused turnovers. She will graduate as Babson's all-time leader in career points (255) and assists (66) while ranking second in goals (189) and third in groundballs (141). This is the fourth First-Team All-NEWMAC honor for Martignetti, who will now seek her third All-New England selection and her second All-American award. Junior midfielder Jackie Godfrey (Franklin, Mass.) received First Team All-Conference honors for the third straight season after leading the team with 27 assists, 52 groundball, and 31 caused turnovers. Godfrey also added 38 goals for 65 points while amassing 43 draw controls. Like Martignetti, she will also be seeking her third All-New England and second All-American honors. Also named to the All-NEWMAC First Team were sophomore Kaitlyn Pettengill (Hopkinton, Mass.), sophomore Anna Collins (Winchester, Mass.), and senior Brianne Carlson (Wolfeboro, N.H.). Pettengill tied for the team lead with 54 goals from the attack position, while also adding 11 assists for 65 points. It was her second straight First Team selection. Midfielder Collins earned her first conference honor after a breakout season this spring, as she matched Pettengill with 54 goals to go along with 14 assists (68 total points), 33 groundballs, 20 CTs, and a team-high 46 draw controls. The team's top defender, Carlson also garnered NEWMAC recognition for the first time, as she ranked among the team leaders with 30 groundballs and 15 caused turnovers while routinely guarding the opposition's top player.
Following in the footsteps of Martignetti (2005), Godfrey (2006), and Pettengill (2007), first-year goalie Sarah Macary (Woodbury, Conn.) became Babson's fourth straight NEWMAC Rookie of the Year selection. The freshman keeper was spectacular in net this spring, leading the conference with 16 victories and a 7.71 goals against average while ranking in the national top-10 with a .571 save percentage. She started all 18 of the team's games, played 1035 of the Beavers' 1089 minutes, and made 177 total saves. Also earning postseason honors were senior Katie Boshko (Huntington, N.Y.) and sophomore Nicole Dagesse (Cheshire, Conn.), who were both named to the NEWMAC Academic All-Conference Team. Boshko played in four games this spring, scoring one goal and picking up one draw, while Dagesse totaled three goals, three groundballs, four draws, and a caused turnover in 11 games. |
