NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - The Babson softball team posted 33 hits in a doubleheader sweep of NEWMAC foe Smith College on Saturday, as the Beavers claimed an 8-4 win in game one and a 9-2 victory in game two. With the two wins, Babson improved to 15-9 overall and 4-2 in the conference.

The Beavers took a 2-0 lead in the first inning of game one, as senior pitcher Jess Byrn doubled in one run and later scored on an RBI single by Jess Winer. Smith answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning, but Babson regained the lead with two more in the second thanks to two hits and two key errors. Sophomore Michelle Bolduc scored the tying run on the Pioneers' second miscue of the inning, and Byrn recorded her second RBI of the game with a single that scored sophomore Brittney Russo.

After Smith once again knotted the score at 4-4 with a run in the fifth, the Beavers went in front to stay when senior captain Jess Cohen tripled in junior Kaitlyn Clark in the sixth. The Green and White tackd on three key insurance runs in the seventh, including one on an RBI fielder's choice by junior Courtney Thurston, to claim the 8-4 win.

After a rough first inning, Byrn settled down to limit Smith to just one run over the final six innings. The victory was her ninth of the season and 30th of her stellar career - placing her fourth on Babson's all-time list.

Despite finishing with 20 hits, the Beavers found themselves trailing 2-0 after three innings of game two. However, Babson posted one run in the fourth on a Bolduc RBI single and then erupted for seven in the fifth on its way to the eventual 9-2 rout. Junior Kim D'Agostino, sophomore Brittney Russo, first-year Jess Winer, Byrn, Clark, and Thurston all knocked in runs during the seven-run outburst.

Russo led Babson's 20-hit attack in game two with a career-best 5-for-5 performance. Winer added four hits, Cohen posted three hits, and Byrn and D'Agostino recorded two hits apiece. First-year Caroline Barr picked up in the win in relief of sophomore Danielle Liska, improving her record to 2-1 on the year.
