MEDFORD, Mass. - Junior pitcher Lauren Gelmetti (Westfield, NJ) allowed one hit in six innings during a 6-0 victory in the opener, and senior Heather Kleinberger (New City, NY) poked a two-run single in the bottom of the sixth for a 2-1 victory game two as the 23rd-ranked Tufts softball team swept a double-header against Babson College on Tuesday afternoon at Spicer Field.

Gelmetti retired the first 12 batters she faced until Babson first-year 1B Jess Winer (Longmeadow, MA) singled to lead off the fifth. Gelmetti would go on to face just 19 Babson batters in six innings, striking out five along the way.

Tufts got all the offense it would need in the first on a solo home run by senior 2B Danielle Lopez (Danvers, MA), her fourth. They added four unearned runs in the fourth, capped by three consecutive run-scoring hits from sophomore SS Casey Sullivan (Berlin, CT), Lopez and sophomore 1B Christy Tinker (Woodbridge, CT). Kleinberger added a pinch-hit sacrifice fly for the final Jumbo run in the sixth.

Junior CF Laura Chapman (Seattle, WA) finished 3-for-3 with two runs scored for Tufts in game one, while Lopez (2-for-4, 2 runs, 2 RBI) and Tinker (2-for-3) also had multiple hits. Senior DH Jess Byrn (Safety Harbor, FL) had the second Babson hit off Tufts reliever Kim Miner (Concord, MA) to lead off the seventh. The Beavers had runners on second and third with no outs in the inning, but Miner worked out of it to preserve the shutout.

Game two started with both teams failing to score after getting runners to second and third in the first inning. Starters Stefanie Tong (Burlingame, CA) for Tufts and Danielle Liska (Seymour, CT) for Babson cruised through the middle innings. Liska retired 11 of 12 Tufts batters during one stretch, which was topped by Tong recording 16 outs in a row.

Babson brought in Byrn to pitch in the fifth, and she retired the first five batters she faced. Lopez hit a two-out single in the sixth and went to third on a double by junior 1B Cara Hovhanessian (Farmington, CT). Kleinberger then hit her single to right, scoring both for a 2-1 Tufts lead.

The Beavers rallied in the seventh. Sophomore 2B Britt Russo (Middletown, CT) led off with a walk and first-year LF Nicole Giuliano (North Reading, MA) followed with a single. After both were moved over by a bunt, junior CF Kim D'Agostino (Woburn, MA) singled to score Russo. Another bunt put the tying run on third and the go-ahead run on second, but Tong fielded a ball back up the middle for the final out.

Kleinberger and Lopez both finished 2-for-3 in game two for Tufts. Babson's Liska pitched four innings, allowing three hits, no runs and no walks.

The wins gave Tufts eight straight wins and a 15-5 record. A three-game winning streak ended for Babson, which is now 15-11.
