SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Samantha Rhodes pitched two complete-game victories to lead the Springfield College softball team to 6-3 and 8-0 wins over Babson College this afternoon in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference action at SC's Potter Field.

With the wins, Springfield has upped its record to 21-13 overall and 9-5 in NEWMAC play. Babson, meanwhile, falls to 20-16 overall and is also 9-5 in the league. The Pride have now won 12 of their last 14 games and are tied for third place in the conference with Babson with two league games to go.

Rhodes, a junior lefthander from Mendon, Mass., has won her last eight starts, including the two today, to improve to 15-4 overall. In game one, she allowed seven hits and three runs (two earned) while striking out three and walking two. In game two, she was even more effective, allowing just four hits in the 8-0 5-inning contest while striking out two and walking one.

In the first game, Springfield jumped out to a 3-0 advantage after the first two innings. A two-out double by junior DP Danielle Spiro (South Windsor, Conn.) plated one run in the first before a two-run home run by junior CF Angie Atkins (East Haddam, Conn.) scored two more in the second.

The Beavers came right back with two in the top of the third. Babson executed a perfect first-and-third double steal to tally its first run, with senior pitcher Jess Byrn (Safety Harbor, Fla.) scoring the run. Moments later, junior shortstop Kaitlyn Clark (Ramsey, N.J.) scored on a double by freshman 1B Jess Winer (Longmeadow, Mass.), making it 3-2, SC.

Springfield came back to add three runs in the bottom of the fifth, as freshman 1B Jessica Hillman (Seymour, Conn.) smashed a clutch two-out three-run double off the wall in left-center on a 3-2 pitch, putting SC in the lead, 6-2.

Babson did not go quietly in the 7th, adding one run on a two-out RBI single by Clark before a groundout ended the game.

Babson outhit Springfield, 7-6, in the opener while both teams committed two errors. Clark wound up 3-for-3 for the Beavers, and Winer and junior Courtney Thurston (Taunton, Mass.) were both 2-for-3. Byrn (11-8) took the loss on the mound in the complete game effort, striking out three and walking four. Spiro was 2-for-3 for the home team. Hillman finished with three RBIs.

In the second game, Springfield took an immediate 2-0 lead in the first inning on a two-run home run by sophomore catcher Michelle Wlosek (Nutley, N.J.) - her seventh round-tripper of the year.

Springfield added three runs in the third, all unearned. After the first two batters made outs, Atkins singled, and moved up one base on a single by Hillman. Wlosek then walked before an error scored one run with everyone moving up a base. Sophomore shortstop Jaimie Moran (Manchester, Conn.) then hit a shallow fly that was dropped for the Beavers' second miscue of the inning, allowing two more runs to cross the plate.

The Pride finished off the win with three more runs off starting sophomore righthander Danielle Liska (Seymour, Conn.) in the fifth. Atkins led with a double, and Hillman singled her to third. Wlosek then singled in SC's sixth run, and a ground out by Spiro put runners on second and third with one out. Moran followed with a single to plate the seventh run, and promptly stole second, again placing runners on second and third with one out. Senior 3B Lauren D'Arrigo (Lexington, Mass.) then hit a sacrifice fly to center, scoring pinch-runner Laura Riccio (Bristol, Conn.) from third and ended the 8-0 win.

Atkins was 2-for-2 with three runs scored in the nightcap, while Hillman went 2-for-3. Wlosek was 2-for-2 with three RBIs and two runs scored for SC, which outhit Babson, 7-4. For the Beavrs, sophomore outfielder Michelle Bolduc (Darien, Conn.) went 2-for-2.
