WELLESLEY, Mass. - The Babson College women's swimming and diving team wrapped up its season at the 2008 NEWMAC Championships at Wellesley College on Sunday, as the Beavers finished seventh overall. Highlighting the day for Babson was a record-setting performance by the 400 freestyle relay team consisting of senior captain Meg Lynch, senior Erica Salisbury, senior Skye Hendrix, and first-year Mia Filippini. After finishing first in the morning trials, the foursome took sixth overall in the finals with a time of 3:44.42 - breaking the previous program mark of 2:45.28 set last year by Lynch, Salisbury, Hendrix, and Meg Batley '07. Although not in a standard race format, Lynch and Filippini also added new school records in timed trials on Sunday. Filippini swam the 50 back in 28.48 seconds, erasing the former mark of 29.00 set by RC Saint-Amour in 2003-04, and Lynch swam the 100 IM in 1:01.13, surpassing Samantha Grimes' long-standing record of 1:03.67 set back in 1993-94. For eight-time NEWMAC Champion Lynch, it was her 11th individual program record and 16th overall. In addition to their contributions in the 400 free relay, Hendrix and Salisbury also added strong individual performances. Hendrix took 16th in the 100 free with a time of 56.66 seconds, while Salisbury came in 21st in the 200 back with a finish of 2:25.28. Also swimming well for Babson on Sunday were senior captain Erika Gammon, who finished 15th in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:40.55, and sophomore Stephanie Burns, who took 23rd in the same event with a mark of 2:46.74.
A trio of Beavers joined Hendrix in the 100 free, as junior Shirley Wong placed 46th in 1:03.65, first-year Katelynn Conlon took 48th in 1:04.31, and junior Claudia Gutierrez finished 52nd in 1:07.17, and Gammon, senior Lynn Root, first-year Christina Stone, and Burns teamed up to finish 17th with a time of 4:09.60 in the 400 free relay. |
