Sprint Medley Wins at Texas Relays
April 4, 2008 AUSTIN, Texas - The Baylor women's sprint medley relay clocked a time of 3:48.08 to win the women's university event finals at the 81st Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays on Friday night at Mike A. Myers Stadium. The Lady Bears earn their fifth-ever title at the Texas Relays. In 2006, Baylor won the sprint medley relay and the distance medley relay. The Lady Bears won the 4x400-meter relay in 1998 and took first in the 4x800-meter relay in 1993. Tiffany Townsend led off for Baylor, running the first 200-meter leg in 23.2 seconds. Brittany Carr clocked 23.3 seconds on the second 200-meter leg and looked to be tied for first with LSU heading into the 400-meter leg. The Tigers had trouble passing the baton, and ran out of the exchange zone. Carla Grace ran Baylor's 400-meter leg in 53.5 seconds and passed to Lauren Hagans for the 800-meter anchor leg with a five-meter lead. "I thought that all four legs did a great job tonight," said head coach Hagans was passed by UTEP on the backstretch of the first lap, but regained the lead after the first lap. With 200 meters to go UTEP's anchor made a kick and took a 10-meter lead through the last turn. Hagans closed the gap and passed UTEP on the homestretch, holding on for the win. "I saw the UTEP anchor coming around me right at the beginning, so I just sat in behind her," said Hagans. "Coming into the last turn I was hurting a little bit, but I knew that I still had another gear, so I felt good when I was making my kick." The Baylor women's 4x100-meter relay qualified third overall for Saturday's event finals with a time of 44.86. The team of Brittany Bruce, Grace, Carr and Townsend will compete in tomorrow's finals. Kaleigh Teel tied her own school record in the pole vault with her second regional qualifying height of 3.85m (12-07 ½) to finish in fourth place overall. Carr and Townsend each qualified for the event finals of the women's 100 meters on Saturday. Carr finished with the seventh-best time of the preliminaries at 11.67, while Townsend clocked 11.70 to finish ninth in the prelims. The Baylor women's team will compete in three relay finals on Saturday, while the men's team will see action in two relays, including the Invitational 4x400-meter relay. In addition, Carr, Townsend and Justin Boyd will compete in individual event finals. "We have a lot of opportunities to compete tomorrow," said Harbour. "I am excited to see what our women's 4x100-meter relay will be able to do. We really have a chance to do well in all of our relays. We will also be well represented with Tiffany and Brittany in the 100 meters and Justin Boyd in the 400-meter hurdles." In competition at the Stanford Invitational, Erin Bedell clocked 10:24.56 in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase to finish in eighth place overall in her first ever running of the event. The time is an NCAA Regional qualifying mark and ranks fourth in school history. It also ranks as the fastest time in school history for a first-time steeplechase runner. "That is a great opening race for Lyndsy Bedell clocked 34:43.82 in the women's 10,000 meters to place 23rd overall. Her time qualifies as an NCAA Provisional mark. The Bears return to action on Saturday at 12:15 p.m. with the event finals of the men's 400-meter hurdles. Live results can be found at www.TexasSports.com.
