WACO, Texas -

The Baylor men's and women's track and field teams placed 18 student athletes on the 2008 Academic All-Big 12 team, including 16 first-team selections, the league office announced on Tuesday.

 

The 18 selections ties the most in Baylor track and field history, as the 2007 squad also placed 18 student-athletes on the Academic All-Big 12 team. The 16 first-team selections marks a new program record.

 

Nominated by each institution's director of student-athlete support services and the media relations offices, the men's track & field academic all-league squad consisted of 82 first team members combined with 21 on the second team, while the women had 109 first team recipients and 22 student-athletes on the second team.  First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, and the second team are those who have a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.

 

To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of his/her team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.


 

 

 

Lyndsy Bedell and Brittany Devereaux earned their third-straight first-team selections, while Lauren Hagans received her third honor and first selection to the first-team.

 

The 2008 Big 12 Outdoor Track & Field Championships will take place at Potts Field in Boulder Colo. on Friday-Sunday, May 16-18.  It will mark the first time Colorado has hosted the event.
