No. 11 Women's Tennis falls to No. 1 Stanford

MADISON, Wis. - Fifteenth-ranked senior Zuzana Zemenova made quick work of her singles opponent, Lindsay Burdette, but could only watch from there as the Baylor women's tennis team fell 4-2 to top-ranked and top-seeded Stanford at the ITA National Team Indoor Championship in Madison, Wis., on Thursday. The Bears (2-1) suffered just their first loss of the season as Stanford improved to 2-0. In three very close doubles matches, Stanford picked up the lone point earning victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles positions. The point, however, was not easy. Zemenova and Lenka Broosova, the nation's fourth-ranked doubles tandem, joined forces again to earn a 9-8 (7-5) victory over Burdette and Hilary Barte. Baylor lost its other two doubles matches by scores of 9-7 and 8-6.
After Zemenova knotted things up at one with her 6-3, 6-2 victory over No. 39 Burdette, Baylor and Stanford traded points with Stanford's Celia Durkin defeating No. 56 Jana Bielikova (6-4, 6-2) and No. 18 Lenka Broosova besting the Cardinals' Hilary Barte (6-2, 2-6, 6-3). Broosova's match was the first three-set match she's played this season and her win improved her record to 19-3. Stanford grabbed two of the final three points available in the match for the 4-2 victory with wins over No. 23 Taylor Ormond and Jelena Stanivuk. When Stanford earned the matching-winning points, No. 87 Karolina Filipiak and No. 58 Carolyn McVeigh of Stanford were knotted at one set apiece. The loss marks the fourth time in five trips to the national indoor event that Baylor has lost in the opening round. The Bears earned their lone opening-round victory at the 2007 event, posting a 5-2 win over then-No. 30 BYU. Baylor currently has an all-time 6-7 record at the national indoor championship, including a 3-4 mark under head coach Joey Scrivano. Baylor will return to action Friday against No. 75 Wisconsin. The consolation match is scheduled to begin at 9:00 a.m. in the Nielsen Tennis Stadium.
