MADISON, Wis. - A 5-1 win over No. 19 Notre Dame brought the 2008 ITA National Women's Team Indoor Championship to an end for the Baylor women's tennis team Saturday at Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison, Wis.

Jana Bielikova and Karolina Filipiak teamed up to defeat the Fighting Irish's Kali Krisik and Dristen Frafael at No. 2 doubles, but a No. 3 doubles loss by Taylor Ormond and Jelena Stanivuk put the pressure on fourth-ranked Lenka Broosova and Zuzana Zemenova.

Broosova and Zemenova suffered a loss to then-ninth-ranked Brook Buck and Kelcy Tefft late in the fall season at the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championship in Columbus, Ohio, but were determined to see a different outcome this time.

The match went to a tie-breaker, but ultimately Broosova and Zemenova emerged victorious over the third-ranked duo from Notre Dame, 9-8 (7-4).

"I don't think I can say it enough about how important the leadership of ZZ and Lenka is to this team," said head coach Joey Scrivano. "ZZ was the best doubles player on the court today and I'm proud of the way they responded after being defeated by this same team at the national indoors earlier this season."

The win improved Broosova and Zemenova to 4-0 this spring, 17-3 overall, and gave Baylor a 1-0 lead.

Fifteenth-ranked Zemenova put the Bears up 2-0 after an impressive run past No. 64 Buck. Zemenova recorded a 6-2, 6-2 win to improve to 10-2 in singles this season, including a 6-1 mark against ranked opponents.

After No. 47 Bielikova earned a three-set victory over No. 82 Katie Potts, 6-3, 5-7, 6-3, Broosova clinched the match with a straight-set victory over No. 62 Cosmina Ciobanu, 7-6 (7-1), 6-0.

The win improved Broosova to 21-3 this season and gives her a 5-0 mark in dual action.

Notre Dame earned their lone point at No. 3 singles as Tefft defeated No. 23 Ormond in three sets. After falling 3-6 in the opening sets, Ormond battled back to even the match with a 4-6 win; Ormond eventually lost the match in the third set, 4-6.

Earning her first win over a ranked opponent, mid-season addition Stanivuk upset No. 88 Colleen Rielley 7-6 (7-2), 6-4 at the No. 4 singles positition.

"From top to bottom our girls never quit today," said Scrivano. "After we clinched the match with Lenka's win, Jelena and Karolina continued to battle. That kind of intensity starts in practice and it's exciting to see it carry over into our matches."

The consolation win gives Baylor a 2-1 record at this season's team indoor event and an overall record of 8-7 when competing at the ITA National Women's Team Indoor Championship.

The Bears' victory over the Fighting Irish is also the first in school history. Baylor was previously 0-2 against Notre Dame dating back to their first match in 1996 and including a 2-5 loss at last season's indoor team championship.

Baylor (4-1) will next be in action Feb. 17 as the Bears travel to Miami (Fla.) to face the Hurricanes.
